Governor hunting, fuel starvation, or hydraulic creep on your T1400 — and no torque specs in sight. This 117-page PDF has every adjustment procedure, circuit diagram, and clearance value you need.

This Workshop Manual splits its 117 pages between the T1400 and T1400H lawn tractors, tracing every system from the engine and governor through the hydrostatic transmission, mower deck, and electrical circuit. Wiring diagrams map the full starting and charging circuits, while hydraulic schematics follow the T1400H piston pump, bypass valve, and charge-circuit oil flow, backed by troubleshooting charts for engine, drivetrain, and electrical faults. Twenty pages of exploded views lay out each component before you pull anything apart, and 39 pages of step-by-step procedures cover the clutch, transmission case, front axle, steering, brakes, and mower. Fill the crankcase to 1.4 L and torque the drain plug to 19.6 to 29.4 N-m; the hydrostatic transmission takes a separate 0.57 L. Stop guessing the teardown order. Search by keyword and jump to the section you need.

Kubota T1400, T1400H Common Problems This Manual Covers

Kubota T1400 engine cranks slowly or won't start, battery seems weak p. 31

Check battery electrolyte level and specific gravity first, since low electrolyte is the most common culprit on these machines. Test voltage at the starter B terminal; use the wiring diagram on page 27 to trace the starting circuit. Verify main switch continuity and all ground connections. If the starter spins but won't catch, check spark plug gap: factory spec is 0.9 to 1.0 mm, and torque the plug to 9.8 to 24.5 N-m when reinstalling.

Manual Section: Engine Troubleshooting
Blades won't engage or spin intermittently, PTO seems fine p. 112

Inspect the mower deck belt and drive belt condition on page 112. Measure the mower deck belt tension spring: factory spec is 160 to 164 mm, and a stretched spring is the most common reason blades slip under load. Check the safety switch setting length at the mower; a misadjusted switch cuts power before the belt even loads. Also verify blade screw torque is 118 to 147 N-m. If the belt looks glazed or cracked, replace it before adjusting tension.

Manual Section: Mower Checking and Adjusting
Uneven cut height across the deck, one side scalps while the other leaves strips p. 112

Examine the blades for bends or wear on page 112; a single bent blade throws the whole deck out of level. With the deck lowered to a flat surface, measure the height at all four corners and adjust per the cutting height procedure. Verify lift lever adjustment is equal side to side. Torque blade screws to 118 to 147 N-m after any blade swap; a loose blade will wobble and create the same uneven pattern even with a level deck.

Manual Section: Mower Checking and Adjusting
Engine runs rough at idle, surges at high speed, hard to keep steady RPM p. 10

Start with the air cleaner: a partially clogged element causes exactly this surge pattern. Clean or replace at the 50-hour interval. Then pull the carburetor and inspect the main jet, needle valve, and pilot screw; the fuel system schematic starting on page 10 shows the full circuit. Drain the float chamber and check for water or varnish. Verify the fuel cut-off solenoid seats fully; if it sticks open or closed, idle quality suffers immediately. Check governor lever and spring condition on page 14 before assuming the carburetor is the sole cause.

Manual Section: Fuel System
Brake pedal spongy or requires excessive travel before tractor slows p. 92

Measure brake lining thickness: allowable limit is 7.5 mm, and anything below that means metal on metal. Check brake pedal play and travel per the adjustment procedure on page 92; worn linings let the pedal sink before engaging. For T1400H models, also verify parking brake adjustment. Inspect the clutch-brake pedal travel on T1400 models separately, since the combined pedal has its own adjustment points. Torque all brake hardware to spec on page 39 after any reassembly.

Manual Section: Brake and Clutch Checking and Adjusting
Tractor won't move or moves only in one direction, drive feels sluggish p. 71

Confirm hydrostatic transmission oil level on the T1400H first; capacity is 0.57 L, and low fluid causes immediate loss of drive in one or both directions. Verify maximum forward and reverse speed adjustment on page 73. On the T1400, inspect the speed variator and check maximum speed adjustment on page 84; a slipping or worn belt in the variator assembly is the usual cause. For either model, make sure the transmission mounting bolts are torqued to 48.1 to 55.9 N-m before suspecting internal damage.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the recommended service intervals?

The manual lays out a full maintenance schedule by interval. Daily checks cover battery electrolyte and mower brake. Every 3 months or 20 hours, check and readjust all belts and brake/clutch pedals. Every 6 months or 50 hours, change engine oil and clean the air cleaner. Annually or every 100 hours, change transmission oil, clean the spark plug, and check the fuel filter. Every 3 years or 300 hours, change transmission oil and fuel lines, and readjust valve clearance.

What fluids and capacities does this machine require?

The engine crankcase takes 1.4 liters (1.5 U.S.qts) of API Service SC or SD engine oil, using SAE20 or 10W-30 below 15°C and SAE30 or 10W-30 above 15°C. The hydrostatic transmission needs 0.57 liters (0.60 U.S.qts) of API service CD, SAE 10W-30 engine oil. The T1400H transmission case holds 1.8 liters (1.9 U.S.qts) of multi-grade transmission fluid or SAE #90 gear oil, while the T1400 takes 2.6 liters (2.7 U.S.qts). The fuel tank holds 8.5 liters (9.0 U.S.qts) of regular automobile gasoline.

How to troubleshoot engine won't start?

When the engine will not crank, look for a discharged battery, loose or corroded battery cables, a disconnected wiring harness, or a blown fuse/fusible link. Fixes include charging or replacing the battery, repairing cables, reconnecting the harness, or replacing the fuse. When it cranks slowly but won't start, suspect a low battery charge, loose battery cables, a faulty starter, increased resistance in moving parts, or fuel/oil viscosity that runs too high at low temperatures. Address these by charging the battery, repairing cables, replacing the starter, or switching to specified fluids.

What are the hydraulic system specifications?

The hydrostatic transmission requires 0.57 liters (0.60 U.S.qts) of API service CD, SAE 10W-30 engine oil. On the T1400H, maximum forward speed runs 104 to 120 rpm and maximum reverse speed 49 to 67 rpm, both measured with 18 x 8.50-8 tires. Driving it all is a 10 cc/rev variable displacement piston pump paired with a 10 cc/rev fixed displacement piston motor.
