Kubota L3130–L5030 Series Common Problems This Manual Covers

Kubota L3130 engine cranks but won't fire in cold weather, glow lamp stays dim p. 92

Check glow plug function and circuit continuity at the battery. Verify voltage holds above 12V under cranking load; a weak battery won't fire the glow system reliably. If plugs fail a resistance test, remove and replace, torquing each to 19.6 to 24.5 N·m (page 34). Clean the air cleaner primary element every 100 hours (page 35), as a plugged filter starves the engine at cold startup.

Manual Section: Engine Troubleshooting
Three-point hitch struggles to lift implement to full height with any load applied p. 445

Check hydraulic oil level first, then verify the filter cartridge isn't past its 200-hour replacement interval (page 35). Inspect the control valve linkage for binding and confirm the position control lever moves its full range. If the implement rises partway but won't reach full height, suspect a worn relief valve or low system pressure. Full diagnosis starts at page 445.

Manual Section: Hydraulic System Troubleshooting
Clutch slips under load or pedal has no free travel after recent adjustment p. 171

Measure clutch pedal free travel: the spec is 20 to 30 mm (page 47). Clutch adjustment is due every 100 hours (page 35), so check the service log first. If free travel is within spec but the clutch still slips under load, the friction disc is worn past service limits. Begin teardown with the disassembly procedure starting at page 171.

Manual Section: Clutch Troubleshooting
HST transmission vibrates and steadily loses pulling power once it reaches operating temperature p. 191

Drain a sample of HST transmission oil and inspect for milky color or metallic particles. Replace the HST oil filter at 200 hours (page 35) if overdue, then refill to the correct capacity listed on page 32 or 33 for your specific model. If symptoms persist after a fluid service, work through the vibration and power-loss checks in the Transmission section beginning at page 191.

Manual Section: Transmission Troubleshooting (HST System)
Left and right brake pedals require different force to stop the tractor p. 367

Check both brake pedals for equal free travel: spec is 15 to 20 mm per side (page 41). Brake adjustment is due every 100 hours (page 35); if you've skipped intervals, reset both sides together. If travel is equal but braking force still differs, remove the dragging-side assembly and inspect for oil-contaminated discs. Full diagnosis is in the Brakes section at page 367.

Manual Section: Brakes Troubleshooting
PTO shaft won't rotate or disengages under load with a mower attached p. 245

Engage PTO at low RPM and listen for slippage under load before pulling anything apart. Remove the clutch assembly and measure disc thickness: factory spec is 1.70 to 1.90 mm (page 245). Discs worn below minimum won't transmit full torque regardless of pressure settings. Check the engagement linkage for binding first, and confirm the PTO selector is fully seated in its detent.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the recommended service intervals?

The manual provides a comprehensive maintenance schedule. For instance, engine oil should be changed initially at 50 hours, and then periodically. The engine oil filter cartridge should also be replaced at the initial 50-hour mark. Other checks and adjustments are recommended at intervals such as 100, 200, 400, 600, 800, 1500, and 3000 hours, as well as yearly and bi-yearly checks. For a complete list, refer to the 'Maintenance' section on page G-12.

What fluids and capacities does this machine require?

The machine requires No. 2-D diesel fuel (or No. 1-D below -10 °C) with a fuel tank capacity of 40 L (10.6 U.S.gals., 8.8 Imp.gals.). The engine crankcase (with filter) needs 5.7 L (6.0 U.S.qts., 5.0 Imp.qts.) for L3130/L3430 models, and 8.2 L (8.7 U.S.qts., 7.2 Imp.qts.) for L4330/L4630/L5030 models, using API classification CD, CE or CF engine oil. The cooling system requires 6.0 L (6.3 U.S.qts., 5.3 Imp.qts.) of fresh clean water with anti-freeze for L3130/L3430 models. The transmission case requires 42 L (11.1 U.S.gals., 9.2 Imp.gals.) of KUBOTA UDT or SUPER UDT fluid for L3130/L3430 models. For detailed capacities and fluid types for all models and components, refer to pages G-9 and G-10.

How to troubleshoot engine won't start?

If the engine does not start, common probable causes include no fuel, air in the fuel system, or water in the fuel system. Solutions involve replenishing fuel, bleeding the fuel system (page G-35), or changing/repairing the fuel system. Other issues could be a clogged fuel pipe or filter, excessively high viscosity oil, or a discharged battery (page G-25).

What are the hydraulic system specifications?

The hydraulic pump specifications include a rated pressure of 17.1 to 18.1 MPa (174.4 to 184.6 kgf/cm², 2480 to 2625 psi) for L3130/L3430/L3830 models, and 18.1 to 19.1 MPa (184.6 to 194.8 kgf/cm², 2625 to 2770 psi) for L4330/L4630/L5030 models, at an oil temperature of 40 to 60 °C. The relief valve setting pressure is also 17.1 to 18.1 MPa for L3130/L3430/L3830 models. The cylinder safety valve operating pressure is 19.6 to 22.6 MPa (200 to 230 kgf/cm², 2845 to 3271 psi).
