Perkins 6.354 & M-Series Common Problems This Manual Covers

Perkins 6.3544 diesel cranks but won't start, needs excessive thermostart use in cold weather

Check the fault finding chart on page 25 for no-start causes. Test fuel lift pump output; static pressure below 6 lbf/in² (41 kN/m²) means a worn pump, with procedures on page 83. Bleed air from the fuel system per page 79, then test the thermostart; current draw should read 12.5/13.5A at 11.5V.

Loses power under load with black exhaust smoke and low turbo boost

Check the air cleaner first; a restricted element starves the turbo, so renew it after six cleanings or once a year (page 80). Then run the turbocharger fault diagnosis on page 92. On T6.3544 engines, boost below 11 lbf/in² (76 kN/m²) at full load points to compressor wear or exhaust leaks; strip procedures start on page 91.

Low oil pressure warning at idle after hot running, gauge drops below normal

Verify pressure with a master gauge; minimum is 30 lbf/in² (207 kN/m²), listed in the technical data on page 11. Check the oil level; the dipstick minimum to maximum band holds 5 Imperial Pints (2.84 litres). If pressure stays low, follow the lubricating system fault procedures starting on page 64 and check the pump and relief valve.

Isolate the turbocharger before blaming the rings. Check shaft end float; on Holset units it must stay within 0.004/0.006 in (0.10/0.15 mm), with the procedure on page 157. Clean the turbo oil drain pipe every 1,000 hours; a blocked drain pushes oil past the seals. If the turbo checks out, follow the piston ring fitting procedure on page 35.

Check coolant level against the full capacity of 38 Imperial Pints (21.6 litres) on page 20. Test the thermostat in heated water; it should open at 170/185°F (77/85°C) depending on which unit is fitted. Follow the cooling system fault procedures starting on page 72 and inspect the water pump for impeller wear.

Remove the canister and inspect the sealing ring seat; fit a new full flow canister and torque it to 15 lbf ft (20 Nm), procedure on page 71. For the sump, renew the gasket and torque the setscrews and nuts evenly to 15 lbf ft (20 Nm). Refill with 26 Imperial Pints (14.8 litres) and recheck warm.
