International

International Harvester manuals in PDF for the red tractors built before IH sold its farm division in 1985, from the Farmall H, a tractor IH built more than 390,000 of, to the 3088 through 3688 row-crop tractors. IH also made its own engines, so the D-206 and D-239 diesels, the BD-264 and BD-281, and the V-304 through V-392 gas V8s each have their own book here.

IH service books carry GSS numbers, and the 3088 through 3688 manual, GSS-1504, runs 497 pages with the Digital Data Center wiring and a closing set of numbered hydraulic tests. The best seller in this category is the 544 through Hydro 86 shop manual, which troubleshoots the hydrostatic drive and wires both the diesel and the LP gas versions.

Choosing the Right International Manual

For tractor and engine work, use Repair Manuals: the D-155 through DT-402 book alone spans eleven IH diesel engines. For lever positions, hitch settings, and the lubrication chart on a 574, 966, or 4166, use Operator Manuals; each carries its IH part number, such as 1084116R1 on the 4166 book. Collectors restoring a Farmall H get magneto and impulse coupling procedures in the GSS5032 book, down to the governor setting.

How much detail does an IH engine book go into?

The D-206 and D-239 engine manual gives the injection pump its own chapter, from specs through disassembly, prints a Special Torque Chart, and wires the cranking motor, generator, and voltage regulator circuit. The 434 service manual covers both the diesel and the petrol tractor.

My tractor says Farmall, International, or McCormick. Where do I look?

Most IH tractors built before 1985 are filed here under International, whatever the hood badge says. The 786 through 1586 books are the exception and sit with Case IH. A few IH and McCormick International titles have their own small categories, so search by the model number, such as 434 or B-250, if a book is not listed here.
