John Deere 550B, 555B Common Problems This Manual Covers
Track keeps coming loose or the machine throws a track in a turn
Start in the Tracks section under Track Chain. It steps through tension, chain disassembly, and rebuild, with the essential tools and service equipment listed up front. Machine torques sit in the procedure itself, including 120 lb-ft on the track shoe cap screws, so skip the universal chart here.

Is undercarriage and track chain work actually covered, or just adjustment?
Covered in full. The Tracks section takes the track chain apart and puts it back, and it lists the essential tools, service equipment, and other materials before you start so you know what the job needs. The real torque numbers live inside the procedures, not a generic chart - the track shoe cap screws, for example, get 120 lb-ft. p. 35
My machine pulls to one side. Does this manual help me sort steering clutches and brakes?
Yes, and in the right order. The Operational Checkout Procedure has a steering system test for the steering clutches and brakes, so you can prove which side is at fault with the machine still assembled. Then the Steering Systems section covers the hydraulic side, including steering valve spool remove and install. p. 979
Does one manual really cover both the 550B and the 555B?
Yes. Deere put both machines in TM-1331: the 550B is the crawler dozer, the 555B is the crawler loader. Where they differ, the spec pages split the values - hydraulic reservoir is 6 gal (22.7 L) on the 550B and 7 gal (26.5 L) on the 555B, and operating weights are listed per blade and shoe setup. p. 979
Are torque specs in here?
Two kinds, and it pays to know the difference. There is a universal fastener chart that applies unless a special torque is specified, and then the machine-specific torques printed right inside each procedure. Use the procedure number when one is given - the universal chart is a fallback for plain hardware, not a spec sheet for the machine. p. 21
I have a backhoe and a winch on mine. Are the attachments covered?
Yes. There are separate sections for the 9300 and 9550 backhoes, each with remove and install plus bucket teeth, shanks, and side cutters. The winch gets its own section covering control linkage, drive, and clutches, and there is a further section for the arch, PTO drive, and ground conditioning tool. p. 485
