This is the factory Repair Technical Manual for the John Deere 6820, 6920 and 6920S tractors built 2001 to 2004, the top end of the 6020 series. It covers teardown and reassembly of the 6068HLA PowerTech engine, the AutoPowr/IVT and PowrQuad Plus/AutoQuad transmissions, hydrostatic steering, brake valve and air brake system, the full hydraulic system from charge pump to rockshaft, wiring harnesses and charging/starting circuits, plus cab controls, air conditioning and electronic hitch control. Real numbers throughout: rated speed 2100 rpm, 19.5 L oil change with filter, 28 L coolant, torque values for pump and rockshaft hardware. Note this is the Repair book - diagnostics and fault codes live in the companion Diagnosis manual.

John Deere 6820, 6920, 6920S Common Problems This Manual Covers

Hard starting, low power, excessive smoke or overheating on the 6.8 L PowerTech

Work through the Engine section systematically: fuel system delivery and filters first, then air intake for restriction, then exhaust and cooling. Most power and smoke complaints on these tractors come back to fuel or air, and the section covers component removal and installation for each circuit.

Manual Section: Section 10, Group 10 — Tune-up (tractor tune-up, fuel system) p. 53
Low hydraulic pressure, slow or jerky implement and hitch response

Start in the Hydraulic System section with the hydraulic pump and charge oil pump, then the valves and rockshaft. The manual gives disassembly steps and the reassembly torques, including 100 N.m on the pump hex socket screws and 75 N.m on the rockshaft valve check valve plug.

Manual Section: Hydraulic system - pump, charge pump, valves, rockshaft p. 878
Tractor cranks in gear or refuses to crank at all

Before pulling the starter, run the neutral start circuit check in the Electrical section, done with the F-N-R lever on PowrQuad Plus/AutoQuad machines. The section also covers the starting circuit, fuses and relays, and wiring harness repair if the interlock wiring itself is at fault.

Manual Section: Electrical equipment - starting circuit and neutral start check p. 63
Repeated air filter and intake trouble from dusty field work

The Engine air intake coverage explains servicing the cleaner properly, and the manual is blunt on one point owners get wrong: the safety (secondary) element is always replaced, never cleaned. Blowing it out and reinstalling is how dusted engines happen, so follow the stated procedure.

Manual Section: Section 10, Group 10 — Tune-up (primary air cleaner element) p. 54

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this manual cover the AutoPowr/IVT transmission or only the PowrQuad?

Both. The Transmission section covers AutoPowr/IVT as well as PowrQuad Plus and AutoQuad, including shifting mechanisms, the FWD clutch and the differential. That matters because a 6920 with IVT is a very different repair job than a PowrQuad 6820, and this book handles removal, disassembly and reassembly for either box. p. 357

Are there diagnostic trouble code lists in this manual?

No, and you should know that before buying. This is the Repair TM: mechanical teardown, component work, torques and assembly. Fault code tables and electronic tests live in the separate Diagnosis/Operation and Test manual for the 6020 series. What this book does include is practical electrical repair content - wiring harnesses, charging and starting circuits, fuses and relays, plus a grounded neutral start circuit check for PowrQuad Plus/AutoQuad using the F-N-R lever. p. 63

Which engines do the 6820, 6920 and 6920S use, and does the manual separate them?

All three run the 6.8 L PowerTech six: 6068HLA71 in the 6820, 6068HLA72 in the 6920 and 6068HLA73 in the 6920S, all rated at 2100 rpm. The Engine section covers installing and removing components, the fuel system, air intake, heating and exhaust, with model differences called out where they exist. p. 24

Will this help with weak or slow hydraulics on the hitch and remotes?

Yes. Low pressure and slow, erratic implement response usually trace to the pump, charge oil pump or valving, and the Hydraulic System section walks through all of it: control elements, pump and charge pump service, valves, the rockshaft and the additional control units (SCVs). It gives the actual assembly torques too, like 100 N.m on the pump hex socket screws, so you put it back together right the first time. p. 878

Does it include real service capacities or just repair steps?

The specification pages are in there: 19.5 L engine oil with filter, 28 L coolant change, and fuel tank of 207 or 250 L depending on fitment. There are also small gems from the field, like the note that if you're topping up battery water more often than every 200 hours, the alternator may be overcharging. p. 32
