Kubota L3301, L3901, L4701 Common Problems This Manual Covers

Kubota L3301 engine cranks but won't fire, no fuel at injectors after sitting overnight

Check the fuel shutoff valve is open and the tank is not empty. Bleed air at the injection pump bleed screw, then inspect the fuel filter for water or debris. Verify compression pressure is above 2.35 MPa (the allowable limit, page 166); if low, measure valve clearance cold at 0.18 to 0.22 mm and inspect for worn piston rings.

Manual Section: 1 Engine
Three-point hitch won't lift implement, raises slowly or stops mid-stroke under load p. 531

Check the hydraulic oil filter first; a clogged filter kills lift pressure. Verify transmission fluid is at the correct level (capacities listed on page 34). Inspect the position control valve linkage for binding or improper adjustment. If fluid and filter are good, test the hydraulic pump output and relief valve per the Hydraulic System section on page 531.

Manual Section: 8 Hydraulic System
Brake pedal drags or won't fully release after coming to a stop p. 249

Measure brake pedal free travel first; it must be 15 to 20 mm (page 249). If it's short, adjust the brake linkage. Inspect the cam plate ball holes for uneven wear and check the pedal return spring for weakness. Clean rust from the brake cam shaft; a corroded cam binds and prevents the brake from fully releasing.

Manual Section: 5 Brakes
Steering wheel is stiff or hard to turn, effort increases at low speed p. 496

Check transmission fluid level and condition; the power steering shares that hydraulic circuit. Verify steering wheel free play is 20 to 50 mm on L3301/L3901 models (page 511). Inspect hydraulic pipe joints for leaks and bleed air from the system. If fluid is good and no leaks appear, test the hydraulic pump output per the Steering section on page 496.

Manual Section: 7 Steering
Battery goes dead or discharges quickly between work sessions, won't hold charge p. 577

Inspect the fan belt for slipping; a loose belt starves the alternator of drive. Check belt deflection against the 7 to 9 mm tension spec on page 170 (L3301/L3901). Load-test the battery and alternator output. If both test good, inspect the wiring harness for corroded connectors or loose grounds per the Electrical System wiring diagram.

Manual Section: 9 Electrical System
Transmission grinds or whines during operation, gear shifts are rough and noisy p. 272

Check transmission fluid level immediately; low fluid is the leading cause of gear noise. Fluid capacities vary by model and transmission type, so verify against the spec table on page 34. If fluid is correct, suspect worn gear backlash, a damaged bearing, or a worn shift fork. Strip and inspect those components per the Transmission section on page 272.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the recommended service intervals?

The manual provides a detailed maintenance check list. For instance, the engine start system should be checked every 50 hours, greasing should be done every 50 hours, and battery condition should be checked every 100 hours. Engine oil and engine oil filter should be changed/replaced every 400 hours, and the cooling system should be flushed every 2000 hours or 2 years.

What fluids and capacities does this machine require?

For the L3301/L3901 model, the fuel tank capacity is 42.0 L (11.0 U.S.gals) and requires No. 2-D S15 diesel fuel. The engine crankcase (with filter) requires 6.7 L (7.1 U.S.qts) of engine oil (refer to G-12 for type). The cooling system requires 6.0 L (6.3 U.S.qts) of fresh clean soft water with anti-freeze. The transmission case (2WD) requires 28.0 L (7.4 U.S.gals) of KUBOTA SUPER UDT-2 fluid.

How to troubleshoot engine won't start?

If the engine does not start, common probable causes include no fuel (solution: fill fuel, see page G-21), air in the fuel system (solution: bleed, see page G-46), or a clogged fuel filter (solution: replace, see page G-39). Other issues could be a discharged battery (solution: charge, see page G-33) or a stuck/clogged injector (solution: replace, see page 1-S43).

What are the hydraulic system specifications?

The hydraulic system has several specifications depending on the model. For the L3301/L3901, the hydraulic pump delivery at rated pressure is above 15.0 L/min (3.96 U.S.gals/min), with an allowable limit of 13.5 L/min. The 2WD relief valve setting pressure is 8.3 to 9.3 MPa (1200 to 1300 psi). The cylinder bore I.D. for L3301/L3901 is 75.300 to 75.500 mm, with an allowable limit of 75.600 mm.
