New Holland 3010S, 4010S, 5010S Common Problems This Manual Covers

Engine overheats rapidly during field operation even with a clean radiator

Pull the thermostat and check it opens at 79° C ± 2° C and reaches full travel of 7.5 mm by 94° C, on page 25. If it sticks below that range, replace it rather than reinstalling. Fill the cooling system to its 11.0 liter capacity, bleed air from the top hose, and watch the dash thermometer; anything past the 105° C red range means keep digging for a water pump or core blockage.

Manual Section: Engine p. 25
Hydraulic lift arms droop after an hour of operation and won't hold a raised implement

Hook up the pressure/flow rater and run the relief valve check; crack-off should read between 186 and 191 bar, climbing to a maximum of 242 bar before flow drops to 0 GPM, on page 226. If pressure falls short, pull the hydraulic pump and check gear-in-body clearance against 0.020 to 0.064 mm, replacing the pump if wear exceeds 0.100 mm, detailed on page 204.

Manual Section: Hydraulic Lift Disassembly, Assembly, and Adjustment p. 226
Clutch pedal feels spongy and won't fully disengage

Check transmission clutch pedal free play first; it should measure 40 mm, and if it's off, adjust the linkage at the turnbuckle, on page 165. Inspect the release fork lever bolts for looseness and torque them to 190 N·m. If free play is correct but the pedal still won't disengage, pull the clutch housing and verify housing thickness hasn't worn below 17.0 mm.

Manual Section: Clutch Removal, Overhaul, and Linkage Adjustment p. 165
Hydraulic pump whines and pressure drops off after warm-up

Pull the pump and measure gear journal clearance in the bearing; wear limit tops out at 0.100 mm against a new spec of 0.032 to 0.070 mm, on page 204. Check gear and bearing end float too, it should run 0.100 to 0.180 mm on a reconditioned pump. Torque the pump mount capscrews to 8 N·m and the draw bolt nut to 41 N·m on reassembly, on page 205.

Manual Section: Hydraulic Pump Overhaul p. 204
Battery won't hold a charge or engine cranks slow in cold weather

Load-test the battery and check charging output at the alternator before condemning the battery itself. Inspect terminal connections for corrosion and clean them, then verify the alternator is putting out proper charging voltage under load. Frequent causes of battery problems are covered on the starting and charging system tests.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the torque specifications for the engine bolts on New Holland 3010S 3-cylinder diesel?

The cylinder head bolts require a preliminary torque of 70 N·m (7.1 kgm, 52 ft. lbs.) and then an additional 90° + 90° turn. Main bearing cap bolts require 80 N·m (8.2 kgm, 59 ft. lbs.) and then a 90° turn. p. 19

What are the replacement specifications for Transmission clutch plates?

The transmission plate thickness should be 8.8 to 9.6 mm (0.35 to 0.38 in.), and the PTO plate thickness should be 8.3 to 8.9 mm (0.33 to 0.35 in.). p. 155

What is the sump oil capacity for the New Holland 3010S, 4010S, and 5010S tractors, including the filter?

For the 3010S, the sump oil capacity (filter included) is 9.0 liters (9.5 US quarts). For the 4010S, it is 10.0 liters (10.6 US quarts), and for the 5010S, it is 11.7 liters (12.3 US quarts). p. 17

How do you fix new Holland 3010S transmission slips under load or won't stay in gear after 500 hours?

Pull the clutch housing and measure plate thickness with calipers; New Holland spec calls for 8.8 to 9.6 mm on the transmission plates. Check the control sleeve working clearance against 0.050 to 0.151 mm and replace any plate below spec. Torque the clutch-to-flywheel capscrews to 27 N·m once reassembled, on page 155. p. 155
