Caterpillar 216 / 226 / 232 / 242 Common Problems This Manual Covers

Machine will not drive or creeps weakly, engine sounds fine

Start with the hydrostatic charge pressure test in the Hydraulic System section: 3100 kPa at low idle, 3300 kPa at high idle on all models. The procedure covers test ports, the hydrostatic drive test and the neutral setting before you touch pump or motor.

Weak lift or breakout force, suspected low relief pressure

Use the main and line relief valve test and adjust procedure, and use the right model figure: 21400 kPa main relief on the 216/232, 23000 kPa on the 226/242, with lift and tilt line reliefs at 27600 and 24500 kPa. Wrong-model specs create phantom faults.

Slow hydraulics on a high-hour machine, pump condition unknown

Run the pump flow test from the Hydraulic System section and judge against the stated wear limit of maximum 7 percent flow loss. Inside the limit, keep the pump and look at reliefs and cylinders; over it, the pump is genuinely worn.

Engine surging, wrong top speed, or hydrostatic runout off spec

Check governed speeds against the model split in the engine speed procedures: high idle 3240 rpm on the 216/232 versus 2820 rpm on the 226/242, low idle 1300 versus 1000 rpm, maximum hydrostatic runout 2820 rpm on all models. Fuel system testing covers the injection pump if speeds will not hold.

Frequently Asked Questions

My 226 fails the main relief pressure test against the spec I found online. Is the valve bad?

Check which model that spec came from first. These four machines split by engine, and the numbers split with them: main relief is 21400 +/- 700 kPa (3100 psi) on the 216 and 232, but 23000 +/- 700 kPa (3335 psi) on the 226 and 242. High idle splits the same way, 3240 rpm on the 216/232 versus 2820 rpm on the 226/242. Test a 226 against the 216 figure and you will chase a fault that is not there. The manual keeps the specs separated by model in the hydraulic test and adjust procedures. p. 2710

Are there error code lists in this manual? How do I pull codes on a 216 or 232?

There are no fault codes to pull, because these pre-B machines have nothing generating them. The 3024C and 3034 are mechanically injected engines with no ECM running the show, so diagnosis is done the old way: pressure gauges on the hydraulic test ports, a tachometer on the engine, and a multimeter on the harness. The electrical section walks through open and short circuit tests on the wiring with full schematics. If someone sells you a 'code reader procedure' for one of these, they are describing a different machine.

The machine cranks and runs but will not drive, or drives weak in one direction. Where do I start?

Charge pressure, before anything else. The hydrostatic loops cannot move the machine without it. Spec is 3100 +/- 200 kPa (450 psi) at low idle and 3300 +/- 200 kPa (480 psi) at high idle, same on all four models. The Power Train and Hydraulic System sections give the test port locations and the full hydrostatic drive test procedure, including the neutral setting and the speed sensing pressures. Low charge pressure points you at the charge circuit before you condemn a pump or motor that may be fine. p. 2706

Hydraulics feel tired and slow. How do I know if the pump is actually worn out or just needs the relief set?

The manual gives you a real number instead of a guess: the pump flow test in the Hydraulic System section, with a wear limit of maximum 7 percent flow loss. Run the flow test, compare loaded flow to free flow, and if the loss is inside 7 percent the pump is serviceable and your problem is elsewhere - relief setting, cylinder leakage past a line relief (lift head end is 27600 kPa, tilt head end 24500 kPa, tilt rod end 27600 kPa), or restriction. Past 7 percent, the pump has earned its rebuild. p. 2651

Does this manual have torque specs for head bolts and machine hardware?

Two different answers, honestly. Engine fastener torques, head bolts included, live inside the Basic Engine sections for the 3024C and 3034, with the specifications and assembly procedures. The separate Torque Specifications section at the back is Cat's generic chart set - standard metric ISO and English SAE fasteners, hydraulic fittings, plugs and hose clamps by thread size - not a machine-specific bolt-by-bolt table. So for a head bolt you go to the engine book; for a random frame bolt you match thread size against the generic chart, which is exactly how the dealer does it. p. 4132
