New Holland 8670, 8670A, 8770, 8770A Common Problems This Manual Covers
Ordering engine parts for an 8770 and getting the wrong ones.
Check the build date before you order. The specification table marks the 8770 as not intercooled, but a footnote states that units built after January 1996 are intercooled, which changes the charge-air plumbing and the parts that go with it. Bore, stroke, displacement and compression ratio are identical across the Genesis family, so a part that looks right for a 8870 may still be wrong for your tractor.

Work the engine section against its own figures. Rated engine speed is 2100 rpm, low idle 900 rpm and high idle 2305 rpm, each with a 25 rpm tolerance, so a tractor that will not reach high idle has a governor or fuel problem rather than a mechanical one. Run the compression test the section describes, then check the cylinder bore against its 111.778 to 111.841 mm diameter and its taper and out-of-round limits.

The hydraulic section is the largest mechanical part of the book, running from page 937 to page 1269. It covers the pump and supply circuit, the remote control valves and the three-point hitch with its draft control, along with the pressure test procedure and the pump overhaul. Test the supply before you strip a valve, because a tired pump makes every function fade together while a drifted valve affects only one.
