BOMAG published this repair manual, publication number 008 190 84, for the BW 142 and BW 172 single drum vibratory rollers: the BW 142, BW 142 D, BW 142 PD, BW 142 PDB, BW 172, BW 172 D, BW 172 PD and BW 172 PDB with the Deutz F3L912 and F4L912 diesel engines. Across 589 pages it walks through troubleshooting and repair of the machine BOMAG actually built, not a generic roller.
It takes you from hydraulic and electric symbol keys through technical data, connection surveys with test points, and special tools, into full repair procedures: engine removal, axle overhaul, travel pump and travel motor teardown, travel circuit flushing, and the vibration drive down to the vibrator shaft and rubber buffers.
Delivered as an English-language PDF download, so the book is on the laptop in the cab or printed page by page at the bench, wherever the roller is stopped.

Bomag BW 142 / BW 172 Series Common Problems This Manual Covers
No vibration or weak amplitude
When the drum stops shaking mid-lift, the fault sits somewhere between the vibration pump, vibration valve, vibration motor and the vibrator shaft itself. The Vibration Drive section covers the vibration motor, coupling, revolving weights, vibrator shaft and rubber buffers, so you can isolate the failed part instead of swapping the whole drive.
Manual Section: Vibration Drive p. 359Roller creeps or will not travel
Low charge pressure, a sticking travel actuation lever or excessive leakage rate will leave the machine crawling or dead in the pass. The Trouble Shooting Chart works through charge pressure, steering pressure, leakage rate and the vibration valve step by step so you test before you replace.
Manual Section: Trouble Shooting Chart p. 219Travel pump shaft seal leaking
A weeping radial seal on the travel pump shaft dumps oil onto the engine deck and eventually starves the closed loop. The Travel Pump section covers exchanging the pump, its coupling and the radial seals on the pump shaft.
Manual Section: Travel Pump p. 277Travel motor worn or leaking internally
Internal leakage in the travel motor shows up as fading drive on grades and a machine that will not hold on a lift. The Travel Motor section gives the cross-section, sealing kits and the procedure for removing and installing the drive and checking the parts.
Manual Section: Travel Motor p. 249Contaminated oil after a component failure
A failed pump or motor sends debris through the whole closed loop, and the next component dies within hours if the circuit is not cleaned. The Travel Circuit section covers flushing the travel circuit properly after a failure.
Manual Section: Travel Circuit p. 329Deutz engine hard to start
The air-cooled F3L912 and F4L912 have their own habits: hard starting, uneven running, loss of power. The Trouble Shooting for Diesel Engine section traces these symptoms to causes, including measuring the diesel engine speed.
Manual Section: Trouble Shooting for Diesel Engine p. 95Axle noise or drive wheel problems
On a wheel drive roller a noisy or failing axle takes the machine off the fill entirely. The Axle section covers removing and installing the axle, the special tools needed, and the repair itself.
Manual Section: Axle p. 155Frequently Asked Questions
Which BOMAG models does this repair manual cover?
It covers the BW 142, BW 142 D, BW 142 PD, BW 142 PDB, BW 172, BW 172 D, BW 172 PD and BW 172 PDB single drum wheel drive vibratory rollers, BOMAG publication 008 190 84.
Which engine is covered?
The Deutz F3L912 and F4L912 diesels. The General Description of Diesel Engine section covers the crankcase, crankshaft, cylinder heads, cooling blower, starter and alternator, and a separate section handles diesel engine troubleshooting. p. 83
Does it include hydraulic pressure test points and settings?
Yes. The Connection Survey and Test Points section shows overall views of connections and test points for both the single-speed and two-speed, two-amplitude machines, so you can put a gauge on the system before condemning a pump or valve. p. 69
Are torque values included?
Yes. The Torques section lists tightening values for metric unified and metric fine threads by bolt yield strength, plus self-locking nuts. Guessing a torque on a vibrating machine is how bolts back out mid-shift; the table takes the guessing out. p. 43
What exactly do I receive with this Bomag BW 142 Repair Manual?
A single searchable PDF file of 589 pages, downloadable right after payment. Nothing ships, nothing waits in the mail.
Is this Bomag BW 142 manual print-friendly?
Yes. The PDF is DRM-free, so printing works from any reader and any printer.
