Five Skytrak telescopic material handlers are covered by this 608-page factory service manual, OEM ID 8990405, from the 4266 through the H and L versions of the 4270 and 4290. Nearly a third of this Skytrak 4266, 4270H, 4270L, 4290H, 4290L service manual PDF goes to the hydraulic system: circuit schematics, pressure diagnosis and testing, steer indexing, and pump, valve and cylinder service. Wiring diagrams trace the start, charging and gear selection circuits, while separate chapters handle the Cummins 4BT3.9 engine, the ZF 4 WG-98 TS transmission and the Stabil-TRAK system test. Measure boom wear pads against the 0.625 in (15.9 mm) new thickness, then torque the mounting capscrews to 31 lb/ft (42 Nm). A parked telehandler costs you every hour it waits. Print the chapter you need and take it to the bench where grease on the pages does no harm, and the bookmarked, searchable original stays clean on your shop computer.

Skytrak 4266, 4270 & 4290 Telehandlers Common Problems This Manual Covers
Skytrak 4266 boom with worn wear pads jerky during extend and retract functions
Check the extend/retract and jerky function causes in the boom troubleshooting chart. Measure each wear pad and replace any pad worn to the 3/8" (9,5 mm) limit listed on page 109. Shim front pads to a .07-.13" (1,8-3,3 mm) gap, then torque mounting capscrews to 31 lb/ft (42 Nm) with Loctite 242 blue.
Manual Section: Boom p. 109Boom chain dropping or sagging out of adjustment during extend and retract
Measure boom chain sag and adjust it to 1.5-2.5" (38-64 mm) following page 65. Verify the intermediate boom to inner boom measurement falls within 8.5-9.0" (216-229 mm). Check the retract chain anchor bolts and torque them to 31 lb/ft (42 Nm) per page 108, then run the dropping chain checks in the boom troubleshooting chart.
Manual Section: General Information, Specifications and Maintenance p. 65ZF 4 WG-98 TS transmission shifting problems with low clutch pressure and grinding noise
Check pump flow, pump pressure and clutch pressure against the transmission troubleshooting chart that ends on page 222. Tighten loose housing capscrews to 34 lb/ft (46 Nm), pump mounting capscrews to 85 lb/ft (115 Nm) and valve body capscrews to 7 lb/ft (9,5 Nm). For overheating, back flush the oil cooler at 165 psi (39.6 bar) per page 209.
Manual Section: Transmission Troubleshooting p. 222Axle assembly noisy, leaking oil or running hot with heavy steering effort
Check differential housing oil level; capacity is 9.5 qt (9,0 liters) per page 30. Verify axle support to vehicle frame bolts hold 680 lb/ft (922 Nm) following page 174, and torque wheel lug nuts to 380 lb/ft (519 Nm). Then work through the axle troubleshooting chart for noise, leak, overheating and steering effort causes.
Manual Section: Axles, Wheels and Tires p. 174Hydraulic boom lift and lower circuit problems with low main system relief pressure
Test main system relief pressure and compare the reading to 3,500 ±100 psi (241,5 ±6,9 bar) listed on page 31. Confirm the reading never tops the 3500 psi (241 bar) maximum system operating pressure noted on page 345. Then follow the boom lift/lower steps in the hydraulic circuit troubleshooting section, checking hoses, tube lines and fittings for damage.
Manual Section: Hydraulic System p. 345Stabil-TRAK system letting the machine sway with a spongy ride and indicator light faults
Test the Stabil-TRAK system using the system test procedure in the section starting on page 569 before replacing any parts. Review the circuit operation description so you know what each component should be doing, then work through the troubleshooting tables for swaying, spongy ride and indicator light faults one step at a time.
Manual Section: Stabil-TRAK™ System p. 569Frequently Asked Questions
