All 100 pages of this Bolens Medium Frame service manual PDF (OEM #176-2324) focus on one thing: putting your tractor back in the yard where it belongs. Inside you get model-specific wiring diagrams with a wire color code, troubleshooting guides for every system, and complete teardown procedures for both the Eaton hydrostatic and the gear drive transaxles. Carburetor work, clutch and brake adjustments, and setup for mower decks, single and two-stage snowthrowers, the tiller, and the Powerpacker Plus fill out the rest. Check the battery at 11.5 to 12.5 volts, and condemn it if the cranking test drops below 9.0 volts over 15 seconds. Forty-year-old tractors don't come with tech support. Bookmarked chapters and a real text layer let you find any spec from the tablet on your workbench.

Bolens Medium Frame Series Common Problems This Manual Covers

Bolens medium frame tractor hydraulic lift inoperative or weak, attachment drops under load

Check transmission oil level first; the hydrostatic system holds 8 qts. (7.6L). Tee a gauge into the lift circuit and test at full throttle following the procedure on page 76: pressure should read no less than 450 P.S.I. (3100 kPa). If it is low, verify charge pressure at 140 P.S.I. plus or minus 20 (964 kPa) and change the transmission filter.

Manual Section: Hydraulic System p. 74
Starter won't crank, no click when key turned, battery and connections look good

Verify battery voltage sits between 11.5 to 12.5 volts and holds 9.0 volts through a 15 second cranking test, page 35. Then check the brake interlock: the switch button should depress about 3/32 in. (2 mm) with the brake applied. Work the seat switch and PTO switch through the troubleshooting chart starting on page 14.

Manual Section: Electrical System p. 14
Engine hard to start, needs repeated tries, then stalls after a few minutes running

Check that the fuel shutoff valve is open, then replace the fuel filter and drain any stale fuel. Clean the foam precleaner and re-oil it with 1 oz. (.03 liter) of oil per page 59; replace the dry element if it has 100 hrs on it. If it still stumbles, run the fuel system troubleshooting guide on page 57.

Manual Section: Fuel System p. 57
Brake pedal travel excessive and braking uneven, tractor creeps on a slope with brake set

Adjust the brake rod pivot block to a 1/16 in. (1.5 mm) gap per the procedure on page 67, then recheck pedal travel with the rear wheels blocked. Inspect the disc and pads for wear or oil contamination and replace anything questionable. Confirm the brake interlock button still depresses 3/32 in. (2 mm) so the starter cranks.

Manual Section: Chassis p. 67
Tractor loses drive or won't move in forward or reverse, engine runs fine

Check hydrostatic transmission oil level; capacity is 8 qts. (7.6L), listed on page 12. Inspect the main drive belt for glazing or a thrown belt, and set the right angle drive belt guides at 1/16 in. (1.5 mm) per page 56. If drive still drops out, follow the drive train troubleshooting chart on page 37 before pulling the hydrostatic unit.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the replacement specifications for the fuel filter?

The fuel filter is a disposable type in-line filter that should be replaced when dirty. To replace it, shut off the valve under the fuel tank, remove the filter from the fuel line, and replace it with a new one. p. 58

What is the engine oil capacity for the gear drive models?

The engine oil capacity for gear drive models varies by engine model: 3 pints (1.4L) for models 1060, 1160, 1467, 1662, 1667; 3-1/4 pints (1.5L) for models 1261, 1461, 1463, 1661, 1663; and 3-1/2 pints (1.6L) for model 1468. p. 10

What is the torque specification for the hydrostatic mounting cap screws?

The four mounting cap screws securing the hydrostatic transmission to the transaxle must be torqued to 24 ft./lbs. (32.5 N-m) when fastening. p. 41

What is the required tire pressure for the medium frame tractors?

Tire inflation should be maintained between 8 pounds (55 kPa) and 12 pounds (82 kPa). Check the pressure using a low pressure gauge. p. 66

What is the required torque for the mower spindle sheave nut?

When assembling the spindle sheave (A) to the mower deck, the nut must be secured and torqued to 90 ft. lbs. (122 Nm). p. 90
