Issued by the factory under document number 0-1-M65 EN, this 629-page Manitou MT 523 repair manual PDF is the workshop book for the MT 523 lift truck family, covering four variants including the MLT 523 Turbo and Série A + MONO-ULTRA builds. Engine and axle work fill most of the book, from cylinder head and crankshaft assembly to axle teardown, troubleshooting and special tools. Hydraulic schematics trace oil from the gear pump and steering pump through the pressure relief valve, shock valve and hydrostatic steering unit, and wiring diagrams map the starter, alternator, preheating resistor, fuse box and relays. Change the MLT 523 Turbo's hydraulic return cartridge every 500 hours, and spec 10 micron return filtration against 100 microns on suction. The pump is apart and one number is missing. Bookmarked chapters and a searchable text layer take you straight to the right page, so your truck is lifting again before the shift ends.

Manitou MT 523, MLT 523 Turbo Common Problems This Manual Covers

Manitou MT 523 hydrostatic steering unit steering wheel hard to turn, turning on its own, or excessive play

Check the hydraulic oil level first; the tank holds 102.5 liters per page 19. Inspect the 100 micron suction strainer and the 10 micron return filter. Then test the steering pump, pressure relief valve and shock valve before you condemn the hydrostatic steering unit. While you are there, look for oil leaks around the unit.

Manual Section: Hydraulic p. 440
Diesel fuel lift pump weak static pressure or air trapped in the fuel system

Test the fuel lift pump static pressure with no delivery against 41/69 kPa (6/10 lbf/in2) on page 167. If it reads low, fit a new pump with a new joint and tighten the setscrews gradually and evenly to 22 Nm (16 lbf ft). Bleed the system using the air elimination procedure, and change the fuel filter cartridge every 500 H.

Manual Section: Engine p. 167
Engine fuel injection atomiser fault with set and reset pressure out of specification on test

Remove the suspect atomiser and test its set and reset pressure against 300 atm (4410 lbf/in2) 30,4 MPa. When you refit it, tighten the clamp setscrew to 22 Nm (16 lbf ft) following page 158 and torque the high-pressure fuel pipe union nuts to 22 Nm. Renew the leak-off pipe sealing washers and tighten the banjo bolt to 9,5 Nm (7,0 lbf ft).

Manual Section: Fuel System Troubleshooting p. 158
Thermostat, coolant pump or fan fault with the engine cooling system running hot

Check the coolant level before anything else; the cooling circuit holds 14.5 liters per page 19. Next, test the thermostat, inspect the coolant pump, and check the fan for damage and secure mounting. Check these one at a time and confirm each before you pull more parts off the engine.

Manual Section: Cooling System Troubleshooting
Front or rear axle vibration, noise, steering difficulty or poor differential action when driving

Check the oil in both differentials and all four wheel reducers before you tear anything down. Fill the front differential to 7 liters, the rear to 5.5 liters, and each wheel reducer to 0.8 liter, per page 20. If the noise or vibration is still there, inspect the axle for wear using the troubleshooting chart.

Manual Section: Axle Assembly - Axle p. 212
Hydrostatic transmission drive pressures reading out of adjustment at the pressure measuring points

Measure the pressure at each transmission pressure measuring point before you change any adjustment. Inspect the boost pump, control valve, hydrostatic pump and hydrostatic motor, then carry out the hydrostatic transmission adjustment step by step. Recheck every measuring point after adjusting. Open the rotary group only if the pressures still will not come into line.

Manual Section: Transmission p. 492
