This 124-page Cub Cadet I Series Shop Manual (OEM #769-03231) covers the full I1042/I1046/I1050 residential zero turn mower, chassis, deck, and drive system, right down to the Hydro-Gear transaxle. You get wiring diagrams for the RMC module and safety circuit chain, a hydraulic schematic for the transaxle, and a dedicated troubleshooting section for tracking issues, hot units, and oil leaks. Torque the electric PTO clutch bolt to 450-600 in-lbs (51-68 Nm), and skip the non-OEM drive belt: it can keep the de-clutch mechanism from working when you hit the brakes. No more chasing a seized deck spindle or a blown 20A fuse with guesswork. This PDF carries bookmarked, searchable text, so pull it up on your phone at the mower and find your spec before the coffee gets cold.

Cub Cadet I1042 to I1050 Series Common Problems This Manual Covers

Cub Cadet I Series I1042/I1046/I1050 won't move or drive belt slips, stuck in freewheel mode

Check the bypass levers behind each rear wheel and verify they are pushed down into drive, not pulled up into freewheel push mode. Inspect the transmission link adjustment on page 35, torquing the link bolt to 8 ft-lbs. Confirm belt tension and idler pulley condition before replacing the drive belt.

Manual Section: Steering p. 35
Engine won't start or stalls right after starting in cold or warm weather

Pull the 20A fuse near the battery and check for continuity with a multimeter; replace it if it's blown, per the fuse spec on page 35. Verify battery terminals are clean and tight, spark plugs are firmly connected, and the fuel tank isn't empty. Confirm the blade PTO switch is disengaged before turning the key.

Manual Section: Electrical System p. 35
PTO won't engage or blades fail to spin when the switch is activated

Remove the PTO clutch cover and inspect the wiring harness connector for corrosion or a loose pin. Check the clutch air gap and torque the electric PTO clutch bolt to 450 to 600 in-lbs as specified on page 23. Test the PTO switch and seat safety switch for continuity before condemning the clutch.

Manual Section: Drive System p. 23
Mower pulls to one side or won't track straight while cutting grass

Check front and rear tire pressure first; low or uneven pressure skews tracking, so set the front tires to 14 psi and the rear tires to 10 psi as listed on page 76. If pressure is correct, run through the Hydro-Gear EZT troubleshooting checklist on page 96 for track-straight symptoms and check the neutral adjustment linkage.

Manual Section: Hydro-Gear Appendix: Troubleshooting p. 96
Transaxle is noisy, running hot, or leaking oil after several seasons of use

Drain the transaxle fluid and inspect it for metal shavings or a burnt smell, both signs of internal wear. Refill with 20W50 engine oil to the 52.4 to 55.8 fl. oz. capacity specified on page 98, then run the purge procedure to clear trapped air before road testing for noise.

Manual Section: Hydro-Gear Appendix: Service and Maintenance p. 98

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the recommended service intervals?

The recommended lubrication intervals include: Pivot bar (4 fittings) every 25 hours, Steering arms (2 fittings) every 25 hours, Wheel bearings (2 fittings) every 25 hours, and Spindles (3 fittings) every 10 hours. Engine maintenance intervals are: Oil Change every 100 hours, Air filter pre cleaner every 25 hours, Air filter every 50 hours, Spark plugs every 100 hours, and Fuel filter every 100 hours. p. 82

What fluids and capacities does this machine require?

The EZT transaxle uses 20W50 engine oil. The fluid volume required for the EZT transaxle is 52.4 fl. oz. (1550 ml) to 55.8 fl. oz. (1650 ml). The oil level should be .75”-1.50” (19-38 mm) below the oil fill port at 50°-100°F (10°-38°C). p. 98

How to troubleshoot engine won't start?

If the engine won't crank and the starter solenoid doesn't click, check for power at the starter solenoid trigger spade and continuity between B and S terminals in the START position. If it cranks but has no spark, check the safety circuits or engine, including the magneto or ground lead. If it cranks but has no fuel, test for power at the after-fire solenoid and continuity from B to A1 in the START position. p. 42

What torque specifications are listed?

Various torque specifications are listed for the EZT transaxle. For example, Side Housing Screws should be tightened to 105-155 lb-in [12-17 Nm], Control Arm Screws to 230-310 lb-in [26-35 Nm], and Center Section Bolts to 525-700 lb-in [60-80 Nm]. The Fan/Pulley Lock Nut requires 360-520 lb-in [41-59 Nm], and the Hub Nut needs 180-200 lb-ft [244-271 Nm]. p. 103
