Cummins printed this book as bulletin 4021416 in April 2014. It is the factory troubleshooting and repair manual for CM850-controlled ISB, ISBe, QSB, ISC, QSC8.3, ISL, ISLe and QSL9 engines, with four volumes in one PDF.
An engine that sits with an amber lamp on loses you hours. Each fault code tree gives you the circuit description, component location and step-by-step checks, so you test the circuit instead of throwing sensors at it. Group 19 covers sensor and switch circuits, connector and pin repair, NOx sensors, the DEF dosing unit and the ECM.
Wiring diagrams come as separate bulletins listed in Service Literature, and rebuild procedures are in the engine shop manual. Print the Group 19 torque table and the sensor resistance charts from the Specifications section and keep them at the engine while you work.

Cummins ISB, ISC, ISL, QSB, QSC, QSL9 Common Problems This Manual Covers
Amber lamp with Fault Code 418, white smoke, loss of power or hard starting
Fault Code 418 means the water in fuel indicator has detected water in the fuel filter, and the book lists possible white smoke, loss of power or hard starting as the effect. Its fault code tree walks you through the checks, then clear the inactive code with INSITE once the repair is done.
Manual Section: Troubleshooting Fault Codes (Volumes 1-4) p. 924Foamy fuel in the clear test line, hard starting or rough running
A few bubbles in the clear line during the air in fuel test are expected. A foamy appearance means a leak that lets air in, an inlet restriction severe enough to cause cavitation, or a system that is not yet primed. The fault code tree then has you check fuel inlet restriction before hunting for the air source.
Manual Section: Troubleshooting Fault Codes (Volumes 1-4) p. 1945EGR temperature high fault codes
Check the coolant level before you condemn the EGR cooler or a sensor. Low engine coolant makes flow through the engine and EGR cooler erratic, and that drives EGR temperatures up. The fault code tree asks for the coolant level first and sends you to replenish the cooling system if it is low.
Manual Section: Troubleshooting Fault Codes (Volumes 1-4) p. 2575Several sensor fault codes active at once
When several sensor codes go active together, suspect the 5 volt supply or ground circuit they share before you blame any one sensor. Group 19 covers the resistance and short circuit checks, plus connector and pin replacement when a terminal turns out to be the problem.
Manual Section: Electronic Controls - Group 19 p. 3123Frequently Asked Questions
How do I clear inactive fault codes on a CM850 engine?
Use the INSITE electronic service tool. The manual explains that the Reset All Faults command clears both active and inactive faults, and the fault code trees end with a step to clear the inactive code once the repair is done. p. 2518
What are the sensor torque values for the Cummins ISB, ISC, ISL, QSB, QSC, QSL9?
Exhaust gas temperature sensor 30 N•m [22 ft-lb]. Coolant temperature and oil pressure sensors 23 N•m [17 ft-lb] each. Rail fuel pressure sensor 70 N•m [52 ft-lb]. Crankshaft position 25 N•m [221 in-lb], camshaft position 10 N•m [89 in-lb], barometric pressure 9 N•m [80 in-lb]. The ECM 60-pin connector takes only 3 N•m [27 in-lb]. p. 3221
How do I troubleshoot rail fuel pressure faults?
The fault code tree has you check the rail fuel pressure sensor first: it must read in range, 0 ±40 bar [0 ±580 psi]. From there the same tree moves on to the low pressure fuel system, air in the fuel and lift pump fuel pressure. p. 2133
Do ISB/QSB engines need valve lash adjustment?
On ISB/QSB engines with the no-adjust overhead, lash adjustment is not required for normal service during the first 241,402 km [150,000 mi]. The Specifications section gives the limits the valve train operates acceptably within, for example 0.152 to 0.381 mm [0.006 to 0.015 in] intake valve lash. p. 3249
Does this book include wiring diagrams?
No. Cummins publishes the wiring diagrams as separate bulletins, and the Service Literature section lists them. This book gives you the circuit descriptions, the resistance and short circuit checks, and connector repair. Get the wiring diagram bulletin for your engine to go with it. p. 3214
