Fiat's own 84-page operator manual, print number 603.64.248.00R, takes seven 86 series tractors from first start to winter storage: the 50-86, 55-86, 60-86 and 70-86, plus the 50-86O, 55-86O and 70-86V orchard and vineyard versions. Controls and instruments fill the biggest stretch of the book, walking you across the instrument panel, the transmission and splitter, the PTO, the differential lock, and the hydraulic lift right through implement attachment and remote valves. Shorter chapters handle the maintenance schedule, fuel system bleeding, fuses and battery, ballasting, track adjustment, and the DT, creeper, reverser and No Spin variants. Change engine oil at 200 hours, and torque wheel nuts to 216 Nm (160 ft lb) after you adjust track. A guessed wheel torque works loose halfway through baling. This bookmarked, text-searchable PDF rides along to whichever field the tractor quit in.

Fiat 50-86–70-86 Series Common Problems This Manual Covers

Fiat 50-86 engine cranks slowly or will not start on frosty mornings after sitting overnight

Check battery charge before repeated cranking; the sealed 12 V battery is rated at 90/100 Ah, listed in the specifications on page 67. Follow the cold starting procedure in the operating instructions on page 22, using the thermostarter where fitted. Limit each attempt to short bursts and let the starter rest between tries.

Manual Section: Engine Starting Troubleshooting p. 22
Hydraulic lift raises the implement slowly or drops under load, draft control not responding

Check hydraulic oil level on level ground before every use and top up per the maintenance schedule on page 50. Verify the draft and position control levers are set correctly for the implement; combined control needs both levers matched. If the lift stays weak, have your dealer test the pump relief valve, factory set at 186 bar per page 65.

Manual Section: Hydraulic System Troubleshooting
Battery goes flat overnight or the charge warning light stays on at working speed

Check battery terminals for corrosion and verify the charge level using the electrical system section on page 58, which also identifies each fuse. Verify the alternator, rated at 400 W per the specifications on page 67, is charging at governed engine speed. If the warning light stays lit, check drive belt tension before replacing parts.

Manual Section: Electrical System Troubleshooting p. 58
Wheel wobble or clunking felt at road speed after adjusting the wheel track

Check every wheel fastener after any track adjustment and again after the first few hours of work. Torque wheel nuts to 216 Nm (160 ft lb) as shown on page 44, and rim-to-hub nuts to 245 Nm, listed on page 45. Recheck daily until the nuts stop taking movement, then return to the normal schedule.

Manual Section: Controls and Instruments p. 44
Front end feels light and steering wanders with a heavy mounted implement raised

Check that front ballast is fitted before working with a heavy rear mounted implement; the front axle ballast weighs 162 kg, shown on page 41. Lower the implement and recheck steering to confirm weight transfer is the cause. Match ballast to the implement so you can keep moving when the field window is short.
