A hydrostatic drive that creeps in neutral or a boom cable gone slack will park a Gradall faster than any engine fault, and this Gradall 534C-6 service manual PDF exists for exactly those days. Factory book 2460-4145 runs 284 pages and covers six variants of the Gradall material handler line. Hydraulic schematics trace the circuits from the Sundstrand M46 pump through the traction lock valve, and wiring diagrams map the full electrical system. Performance checks for the hydrostatic transmission run from charge pressure through the inching valve, each ending in a number you can verify on a gauge. Check for 325 PSI of control pressure in neutral, torque wheel lug nuts to 350-400 lb-ft, and swap hydraulic filters at 1,000 hours. Half these machines outlived the dealers that sold them. Some days it is just you and a dead handler, nobody to call. Download the bookmarked, text-searchable PDF, and by quitting time the boom is swinging again.

Gradall 522-534C-6 Series Common Problems This Manual Covers

Gradall 534C-6 will not drive forward or reverse, engine runs but no wheel movement

Verify the parking brake switch is released and the forward/reverse lever is fully seated. Tee a gauge into the control circuit; in neutral you should read 325 PSI, dropping to 100 PSI when you shift to forward, per the test on page 164. No pressure change points to a stuck drive valve spool or a dead shift solenoid.

Manual Section: Gradall Hydrostatic Drive Performance Checks p. 164
Hydraulic fluid dripping or spraying at the main pump, puddle under the machine after parking

Clean the pump area and run the engine to pinpoint the leak. If the shaft seal is weeping, pull the pump and press the new seal 9/64 inch (3.57 mm) below the face of the pilot diameter, per page 51. Verify charge pressure afterward: 380 to 480 PSI at full throttle.

Manual Section: Hydraulic Component Service Manuals p. 51
Drives fine cold but loses power as hydraulic oil warms up, front tires start locking

Test charge pump flow at the G port on the side of the pump with the oil at operating temperature. You should see 4 GPM at 850 RPM and 12 GPM at 2,500 RPM, per the procedure on page 163. Low flow when hot points to internal pump wear. Replace hydraulic filters over 1,000 hours old.

Manual Section: Gradall Hydrostatic Drive Performance Checks p. 163
Four wheel drive assist will not engage when the 2/4 drive switch is flipped

Check for battery voltage at the drive valve solenoid with the 2/4 switch in the four wheel position; trace the circuit on the wiring diagram on page 279 if it is dead. If the solenoid clicks but the axle still will not pull, gauge the drive circuit: relief should hold 5,500 ± 100 PSI in forward and reverse.

Manual Section: Implement Circuit Performance Checks p. 279
Engine cranks but starts hard or dies out intermittently, gets worse right after refueling

Drain a fuel sample from the bottom of the 38 gallon tank and look for water or sediment; contaminated fuel is the usual culprit on these machines. Replace the fuel filters, bleed the supply line, and check filler cap venting during the pre-start walkaround covered on page 18. Use the cold-weather starting aids on page 19 below freezing.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you restore the parking brake on a Gradall 532C-6 or 534C-6?

To restore the parking brake, loosen each release screw only 1/4 turn at a time in sequence until each screw has lost contact with the guide pin, then remove the release screws. Install the spacers and torque the release screws to 50-70 lb/ft. p. 42

What are the torque specifications for the boom slide bearings on a Gradall 532C-6 or 534C-6?

For the front boom slide bearings, the torque is 32-37 lb-ft for 3/8-24 (5) threads or 68-78 lb-ft for 1/2-20 (5) threads. For the rear boom slide bearings, the torque is 32-37 lb-ft for 3/8-24 (5) threads or 68-78 lb-ft for 1/2-20 (5) threads. p. 40

What is the recommended service interval for the engine oil and filter on a Gradall 532C-6 or 534C-6?

The engine oil and filter should be changed every 500 hours of operation. p. 39

What is the correct hydraulic oil capacity for the Gradall 532C-6 and 534C-6?

The hydraulic system has a capacity of 45 gallons (170.3 liters). p. 40

What is the procedure for checking the hydraulic filter condition on a Gradall 532C-6 or 534C-6?

With the engine running at full throttle, check the hydraulic filter condition indicator. If the needle is in the red area, the filter is clogged and the hydraulic oil is bypassing the filter. The filter must be changed before the needle reaches the red area. p. 20

What format is this Gradall 522 manual in?
