Chasing a hydrostatic drive fault without factory data is slow, expensive guesswork. This Gradall 534C-6 service manual PDF ends that: OEM publication 9112-4116, 284 pages covering five models in the material handler line. Hydrostatic drive performance checks fill nearly half the book, walking you from gauge hookup through charge pressure, main relief, and steering circuit tests to a clear pass or fail. Hydraulic schematics trace the full circuit for each configuration, a wiring diagram covers the electrical system, and rebuild procedures handle the Sundstrand piston pump, Mico brake valve, and Meritor planetary axles under your machine. Set low idle at 800 to 900 RPM, verify 2,500 RPM at full throttle, and replace a pump body once inlet-side gear wear passes 0.005 inch (0.127 mm). One missing pressure spec can park the machine all morning. The bookmarked, text-searchable file puts that number seconds away; download it once and keep it on whatever screen lives in the shop.

Gradall 522-534C-6 Series Common Problems This Manual Covers

Gradall 534C-6 won't drive forward or reverse, parking brake released, engine runs strong

Check charge pressure at the test port with the engine at low idle; the gauge should read approximately 380 PSI, per the test on page 161. If pressure is low, replace both hydraulic filters and retest. Verify the park brake is fully releasing and inspect the directional control solenoid wiring against the diagram.

Manual Section: Gradall Hydrostatic Drive Performance Checks p. 161
Main hydraulic pump leaking oil at the shaft, fluid pooling under the machine

Clean the pump housing and run the engine briefly to pinpoint the leak source. Replace the shaft seal following the Sundstrand pump repair procedure starting on page 47. During reassembly, inspect the gear journals and replace the shaft if journal wear exceeds 0.001 inch (0.025 mm), then torque the cap screws to 34 to 38 ft-lb.

Manual Section: Sundstrand Sauer Service Manual p. 51
Boom and lift functions slow down and lose power as hydraulic oil warms up

Test charge pump flow before condemning the main pump. Measure flow at 850 RPM; you should see 4 GPM, rising to 12 GPM at 2,500 RPM, per page 163. Low flow when hot points to internal wear in the charge pump. Check the filter restriction indicator and pull an oil sample for analysis before any teardown.

Manual Section: Gradall Hydrostatic Drive Performance Checks p. 163
Front tires lock up or drag during travel, worse after machine warms up

Check hydrostatic control pressure in neutral; it should read 325 PSI, plus or minus 15 PSI, per the test on page 164. Incorrect control pressure keeps the front motors stroked when they should destroke. Inspect the traction-lock valve and front drive motors covered in the drive train overview on page 24 for stuck spools.

Manual Section: Control Pressure p. 164
4x4 drive won't engage when switched, front axle never pulls even in soft ground

Test for voltage at the 2/4 drive valve solenoid with the switch engaged, using the wiring diagram to trace the circuit. If the solenoid energizes but the valve won't shift, pull the cartridge and check for a stuck spool. Also verify charge pressure holds 380 PSI at low idle; weak charge pressure can prevent valve shift. The pressure checks run in the Gradall Hydrostatic Drive Performance Checks section, which starts on page 149.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the torque specifications for the boom slide bearings on a Gradall 522 or 524?

The torque specifications for the boom slide bearings (front and rear) are 32-37 ft-lb for 3/8-24 (grade 5) fasteners and 68-78 ft-lb for 1/2-20 (grade 5) fasteners. p. 40

What are the hydraulic pressure settings for the main control relief valve on all Gradall 522-534C-6 Series models?

The main control relief valve pressure setting for all models is 3,000 ± 100 PSI. p. 173

What is the recommended oil for the hydraulic system on a Gradall material handler?

The recommended hydraulic fluid for the system is Mobilfluid 424 or an equivalent tractor hydraulic fluid. p. 13

What is the correct procedure for bleeding the MICO open center power brake valve?

Manual bleeding involves stroking the brake pedal while an assistant opens and closes the bleeder screws on the brake closest to the valve first. Alternatively, pressure bleeding requires installing a bleeder by-pass line and developing 50-200 PSI at the inlet to the brake valve. p. 68

What is the torque specification for the wheel lug nuts on the Gradall handler?

The wheel lug nuts should be torqued to 350-400 ft-lb every 3 months or 500 hours. p. 40

How will I receive this Gradall 522 Service Manual?

Immediate download of the complete 284-page searchable Service Manual. Access it on any device, from a laptop at your desk to a phone in the field.
