Whether the question is a lug torque, a charge pressure, or which grease the boom slide paths take, one book settles it for six Gradall material handlers: the 288-page factory publication, OEM 9133-4037, covering the 522 and 534D series. Written as the Gradall 522, 524, 534D-6, 534D-6T, 522D, 524D owner/operator manual PDF, it runs far past daily operation: a full hydraulic schematic, the wiring diagram, and rebuild coverage for the Sundstrand piston pumps, Rexroth gear pumps, Mico brake valve, and Meritor planetary axles. Hydrostatic drive performance checks take up roughly the back half of the book. Change the hydraulic filter at 1,000 hours, hold residual brake valve pressure between 12 and 20 PSI, and pull wheel lug nuts to 350 to 400 ft.-lb. Guess any of those and you buy a second teardown. The text-searchable, bookmarked PDF puts the right spec in front of you before the first bolt comes loose.

Gradall 522-534D-6 Series Common Problems This Manual Covers

Gradall 534D-6 travels weak when cold, loses drive power completely after hydraulic oil warms up

Check the hydraulic oil level at the reservoir before anything else; the system holds 45 gal (170 L) per the capacity chart on page 42. Replace hydraulic filters with more than 1,000 hours on them, the interval noted on page 160. Then run the hydrostatic drive performance checks starting on page 151 to isolate internal transmission leakage.

Manual Section: Gradall Hydrostatic Drive Performance Checks p. 151
Loud howling or cavitation noise from hydrostatic pump area, machine barely moves under load

Check the reservoir oil level cold before startup; low oil lets the charge pump pull air and cavitate. Inspect the suction line and strainer for clogging, and change hydraulic filters carrying more than 1,000 hours, the limit shown on page 160. Pull an oil sample through the test port using the procedure on page 43 and look for foam.

Manual Section: Gradall Hydrostatic Drive Performance Checks p. 160
Front brakes drag and lock the tires, machine only moves after pumping the brake pedal

Test the residual valve in the Mico power brake valve first; it must hold 12-20 PSI, the spec listed on page 59. A stuck residual valve traps pressure at the calipers and drags the brakes until you pump the pedal. Bleed the brake system following the procedures that start on page 57, then verify the pedal fully returns.

Manual Section: Mico Open Center Hydraulic Power Brake Valve p. 59
Steering wheel turns hard or does nothing, feels like the steering circuit is bypassing internally

Check the hydraulic oil level, then trace the steering circuit on the schematic on page 47. Inspect steering hoses for external leaks and retorque loose SAE fittings; a -8 fitting takes 60 +/- 2 ft-lb per the chart on page 249. If steering stays heavy with fluid full and no leaks, the steering control unit is bypassing internally.

Manual Section: Steering Control Units (Char-Lynn) Troubleshooting
Parking brake will not release, machine drags and will not roll after sitting overnight

Release the parking brake manually with the release screws: tighten each screw only 1/4 turn at a time, in sequence, until all three have turned one full turn, about 50 ft-lb, following the procedure on page 38. Then verify hydraulic release pressure reaches the brake before returning the machine to service.

Manual Section: Brake System p. 38

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the torque specifications for the wheel lug nuts on the Gradall 522?

The torque specification for the wheel lug nuts on the Gradall 522 is 350 to 400 ft-lbs. This torque should be checked at 3-month (500-hour) intervals. p. 42

What is the recommended hydraulic oil for the Gradall material handler?

The recommended hydraulic fluid for the Gradall material handler is Mobilfluid 424 or an equivalent. The system capacity is approximately 45 gallons (170 L). p. 42

What is the procedure for checking the engine oil pressure on the Gradall 522/524/534D-6?

After the engine starts, observe the engine oil pressure gauge. If the gauge remains on zero for more than ten seconds, stop the engine and determine the cause. The minimum oil pressure at operating temperature is 10 PSI (69 kPa) at low idle and 30 PSI (207 kPa) at full throttle. p. 22

How often should the front axle be lubricated on the Gradall 522/524/534D-6?

The front axle pivot and front axle points should be lubricated every 50 hours of operation. The front axle capacity is 40 pints (19 L) of special lube (SL). p. 41

What is the torque specification for the cab mounting bolts on a Gradall 522-534D-6 Series?

The torque specification for the cab mounting bolts is 450 to 475 ft-lbs. p. 42

What format is this Gradall 522 manual in?

This is a 288-page searchable PDF ready for immediate download. Works on any device, so pull it up on your phone while you're under the hood. No shipping, no waiting.

Can I print this Gradall 522 manual?

Yes. The PDF is DRM-free, so printing works from any reader and any printer.
