New Holland T1510, T1520 Common Problems This Manual Covers
New Holland T1510/T1520 brake pedal sinks near the floor before the brakes grab, holding poorly on a slope
Check brake pedal free play against the brakes section on page 364; correct travel is 35 to 45 mm (1.38 to 1.77 in). Pull the discs and measure the lining groove depth, replacing any disc worn to 0.1 mm (0.004 in) or less since the allowable limit is flush at 0.0 mm. Bleed the system after reassembly and recheck pedal travel before road testing.
Manual Section: Brakes p. 364Clutch slips or won't fully engage even with the pedal adjusted
Verify clutch pedal free travel first; the spec on page 49 calls for 19 to 30 mm (0.75 to 1.18 in) before the pedal meets resistance. If travel is correct but slip continues, pull the clutch cover and inspect the disc for glazing or oil contamination. Torque the mounting cap screws to 22.6 to 28.4 N·m (16.6 to 21 lb ft) per page 202 on reassembly, and replace the disc if lining is thin or scored.
Manual Section: Clutch p. 202Transmission hard shifting or grinding between gears under load
Split the housing per the gear transmission section starting on page 217 and inspect the shift forks, detent balls, and shifter rod grooves for wear before condemning the gears themselves. A worn detent spring or a scored shift rail groove will let the collar hang up between ratios even when the gear teeth are fine. Replace any fork showing visible slide-gear clearance and reseat the detent balls with fresh springs before buttoning up the case.
Manual Section: Gear Transmission p. 217Hydrostatic drive loses power or surges instead of holding a steady speed
Pressure-test the high pressure relief valve in the hydrostatic transmission section on page 330; it should hold at 27510 kPa (3990 psi) and a valve stuck open or seat worn will bleed off drive pressure under load. Drain and inspect the charge filter for debris before condemning the pump or motor. If pressure won't hold after the valve is cleaned and reseated, pull the pump for internal wear inspection.
Manual Section: Hydrostatic Transmission p. 330Loader or three-point implement lifts slowly or won't reach full height
Check hydraulic pump output against the spec on page 372; a healthy pump should deliver 23.3 L/min (6.2 US gal/min) at rated speed, and anything noticeably below that points to worn pump gears or a suction-side leak. Confirm the system relief valve is holding 14700 kPa plus or minus 500 kPa (2133 plus or minus 70 psi) rather than dumping early. Clean the fluid filter and recheck fluid level before pulling the pump for teardown.
Manual Section: Hydraulic System p. 372Frequently Asked Questions
What are the torque specifications for the flywheel bolts on a New Holland T1510 engine?
For the New Holland T1510 engine (Shibaura N843/N843L), the flywheel retaining cap screws should be torqued to 69 - 78 N·m (51 - 58 lb ft). p. 74
