New Holland TT45A, TT50A Common Problems This Manual Covers

New Holland TT45A transmission growls in neutral, noise gets louder when a range is engaged

Drain and refill the transmission and hydraulic sump with 19.5 liters of fresh oil, the capacity listed on page 65, then run through every range and listen again. If the growl continues, split the tractor and inspect the input and pinion shaft bearings for spalling; adjust bearing preload or replace any rough bearings.

Manual Section: Transmission System p. 233
Rockshaft lifts jerky under load, three point hitch feels weak and drops implements slowly

Check hydraulic oil level first; the combined transmission and hydraulic sump holds 19.5 liters. Replace the hydraulic oil filter, due after the first 50 hours and every 300 hours per page 409, and inspect the pump inlet line for air leaks. Test system pressure and verify the relief valve opens at 120 bar (1740 psi).

Manual Section: Hydraulic System p. 401
Engine cranks slowly or will not turn over at all on cold mornings

Test the battery first: verify a 12 volt, 600 CCA unit with electrolyte sitting 6.35 mm above the plates, per page 528. Clean and tighten both cable clamps. If cranking stays slow, bench test the starter motor and compare draw against the 500 amp at 7.5 volt loaded spec on page 651.

Manual Section: Engine Troubleshooting
PTO shaft keeps turning with lever disengaged, implement will not stop spinning

Check transmission oil level and condition; contaminated oil makes PTO clutch plates drag. Measure PTO clutch lever free play and adjust to 2.5 - 5 mm (0.098 - 0.197 in), the spec on page 200. If drag continues, pull the clutch and measure plate thickness against the 7.6 mm PTO plate specification.

Manual Section: Power Take-Off p. 357
Warning lights and dash gauges all went dead at the same time

Check the fuse panel before chasing wiring. Pull each fuse and test continuity; the circuits use 15 amp and 20 amp fuses, ratings listed on page 529. Test the 20 amp fusible link as well. If all fuses check good, trace the instrument circuit using the wiring diagram and verify voltage at the panel connector.

Manual Section: Electrical System p. 521
Clutch slips pulling under load, engine revs up but tractor barely moves

Measure clutch pedal free play and adjust to 45 - 50 mm (1.77 - 1.97 in), the spec on page 200. If slipping continues after adjustment, split the tractor and measure the transmission clutch plate against the 10.5 ± 0.3 mm thickness spec; replace worn plates and inspect the flywheel face for glazing.

Manual Section: Clutches p. 199

What is the correct valve clearance for the engine?

The intake and exhaust valve clearance for both the N844 and N844L engines should be adjusted to 0.2 mm (0.008 in) when in a cold condition. p. 77

What is the required alternator drive belt deflection?

The alternator drive belt deflection should be 10 to 15 mm (0.39 to 0.59 in) when applying 9 to 11 kg (20 to 25 lb) of force between the crank pulley and the alternator pulley. p. 650

What is the engine oil capacity for the TT45A and TT50A tractors?

The approximate engine oil capacity for the TT45A is 6 liters (6.3 quarts), and for the TT50A it is 17 liters (7.3 quarts). p. 65
