Adjusting a Spicer angle-spring clutch on a Versatile 700 or 900 4 wheel drive tractor begins with the disassembly, adjustment and flywheel housing alignment steps in this 311-page Versatile 700 service manual PDF, OEM ID 40070020. Hydraulic schematics trace oil routing through the hitch control valve circuit, and wiring diagrams map the tractor's electrical circuits. Troubleshooting charts cover the clutch, transmission and air conditioning systems, while the drive train chapter works through planetary drives, differentials, drive lines and failure analysis. On a 900, check implement hydraulics at 2000 psi and steering at 1800 psi. Torque the transmission center nut to 250 ft.lb. (340 N-m). Your next task may be ordering a spool seal assembly for the Gresen directional control valve. You buy it once, and the bookmarked file stays yours for every clutch adjustment and Hydraguide steering service on this tractor.

Versatile 700, 900 Common Problems This Manual Covers

Versatile 700 and 900 Spicer angle-spring clutch slips and will not hold when engaged

Check for free pedal first. If there is none, readjust the clutch with the internal adjusting ring, not the external linkage; page 44 and the warning on page 23 say external linkage is never adjusted to compensate for wear. Inspect facings for wear, grease or oil, and replace the facings or the complete driven disc assembly. Replace weak pressure springs and free up any binding release mechanism and linkage, following page 53.

Manual Section: Clutch Troubleshooting p. 53
Clutch gives poor release with pressure plate not retracting or driven disc distorted

Check the pressure plate drive lugs for .006 minimum clearance and replace bent or stretched return springs, following page 51. Verify the lever nose sits in the release sleeve retainer groove and that release travel is sufficient. Measure driven disc runout: it must be straight within .015 in. total indicator reading, or replace the disc. Never force the transmission drive gear into the disc hubs, and do not let the transmission hang unsupported in them (page 27).

Manual Section: Clutch Troubleshooting p. 51
Transmission oil pressure warning light flashing intermittently or glowing with sloppy gear and range shift levers

Shut down the motor immediately on any low oil pressure indication. Page 76 warns that lost lubrication can seize a shaft within 50 seconds. Check the oil level and replenish it. Change a contaminated filter and oil, then examine the system for pressure line leaks, tightening or replacing the line as page 75 directs. If the levers feel sloppy, check the cam plate detent load spring for security and renew it.

Manual Section: Transmission Troubleshooting p. 76
Transmission collar, shift fork, or linkage problem with tractor failing to engage a gear when selecting

Stop the tractor before reselecting any gear; page 58 cautions never to shift while the tractor is in motion. Top up the transmission oil first. If the gear still will not engage, remove the side plate, shift rails, collars and forks, and renew worn forks and collars, following page 75. Straighten or replace bent linkage rods, then adjust their length to synchronize the gear shift to the transmission levers.

Manual Section: Transmission Troubleshooting p. 75
Drive line yokes misaligned or universal joint cracked, tractor showing severe vibration in any gear

Check the yoke position arrows marked on each drive line and realign them. Page 71 warns that misaligned yokes cause imbalance, severe vibration and driveline failure. Inspect for a distorted drive line or a cracked universal joint, and replace the driveline assembly if you find either, per page 75. If acceleration is also sluggish, pry the road brake caliper free of the rotor disc, clean the area and reset clearances.

Manual Section: Transmission Troubleshooting p. 75
Air conditioner gives little or no cooling with low gauge readings and bubbles in sight glass

Measure system pressures. Page 153 calls for 15-25 psi on the low side and 180-225 psi on the high side. Low readings with a stream of bubbles in the sight glass mean a leak. Leak test with the engine not running, as page 166 cautions, with enough R-12 to show 5 psi on the low side. Repair the leaks, check compressor oil level, evacuate with a vacuum pump, then recharge and check performance.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you troubleshoot low hydraulic pressure on a Versatile 700 or 900?

Low hydraulic pressure can be caused by a low reservoir oil level, a contaminated filter, or a pressure line oil leak. To correct this, replenish the oil, remove and clean the filter, or examine the system for leaks and tighten connections as required. p. 75

What is the torque specification for the Versatile 700 wheel mounting bolts?

The Versatile 700 and 900 tractors use 12 wheel mounting bolts. The manual does not provide a specific torque value for these bolts, but it does specify that the axle uses 12 wheel mounting bolts. p. 9

How do you check the transmission oil pressure on a Versatile 700 or 900?

The transmission oil pressure is monitored by a pressure switch that illuminates a warning light on the instrument panel if the pressure falls below 4 to 5 psi (28 kPa). If this light glows, operations must cease immediately to investigate the cause. p. 58

What is the correct coolant capacity for the Versatile 700 tractor?

The cooling system capacity for the 700 tractor is approximately 48 U.S. quarts. p. 7

What is the recommended belt tension for the air conditioner compressor on the FK-4 evaporator?

The compressor drive belt should be adjusted to a 1/2-inch (1.25 cm) depression on the longest span using a tension gauge set to 100 lbs. (45 kg). p. 186

What exactly do I receive with this Versatile 700 Service Manual?

You download the Service Manual yourself: 311 pages, searchable PDF, available immediately. Keep a copy on every device you use.

Am I free to print this Versatile 700 Service Manual?

Yes. Many buyers print one chapter at a time for their own shop and keep the rest on a tablet.
