Part of the Case Repair Manuals.
This 829-page Service Manual breaks down every system on both tractors, from the 451BD/451BDT and 504BD/504BDT engines through fuel injection, hydraulics, steering, power train, brakes, and electrical. You get full wiring diagrams for chasing electrical gremlins, a dedicated troubleshooting section covering the Draft-O-Matic hydraulic system, differential lock, and dual/single pump setups, plus a complete "How It Works" breakdown of the flow divider and remote valves.

Case 1270, 1370 Common Problems This Manual Covers
Case 1370 504 diesel head gasket leaking oil between cylinders, engine temperature climbing p. 62
Remove the cylinder head and inspect the gasket surface for warping or pitting around cylinders 1 and 2. Resurface if needed, then torque the head bolts to 200 to 210 ft. lbs. in the sequence shown on page 62 for 504BD and 504BDT engines. Check coolant level and pressure-test the cooling system before restarting.
Manual Section: EnginesPower steering loses assist or jerks unpredictably, relief pressure won't hold steady p. 369
Run the steering pump circuit test on page 365. With the engine at 2000 RPM, steer against the right stop and close the flow meter load valve; relief valve pressure should read 2200 to 2400 PSI. If it reads low, pull the brake valve housing and check the pressure relief inner spring; replace if free length is under 1.930 inches.
Manual Section: SteeringValve tappet clearance reads wrong on the dial indicator after adjustment, rough idle
Pull the valve cover and check tappet clearance with a dial indicator; intake should read 0.015 inch, confirmed at 0.053 inch on the dial after one full crank revolution plus 70 degrees past TDC. Verify the cam-to-crankshaft gear timing marks line up before reassembling, since one tooth off throws every clearance reading on that bank.
Manual Section: EnginesOil seeping from the front timing gear cover or pan gasket, visible after warm-up p. 85
Clean the mating surfaces on the front timing gear cover and oil pan, then check for a crushed or torn gasket as the leak source. Reseal with a new gasket and torque the oil pan drain plug to 18 to 20 ft. lbs. per page 85. Run the engine and recheck after it reaches operating temperature for any seepage.
Manual Section: EnginesAlternator won't charge or charging indicator light flickers on and off while driving p. 560
Check the alternator brush spring tension first; it should hold 10 to 12 oz. with the spring compressed to 1/4 inch, per page 560. If brushes look fine, inspect the wiring harness connectors for corrosion and verify the pulley nut is torqued to 40 to 60 ft. lbs. on page 563 so the belt isn't slipping under load.

What are the recommended service intervals?
The manual provides a table of service intervals for various components. For example, the Front Axle Pivot, King Pins, and Drawbar Roller require service every 10 hours. Engine Crankcase Oil Level, Transmission Oil Level, and Fuel Tank Level should be checked every 50 hours. The Engine Oil Filter, Air Cleaner, and Cooling System require service every 200 hours.
What fluids and capacities does this machine require?
The machine requires various fluids with specific capacities. For the 1270 tractor, the engine crankcase with filters holds 17 U.S. Quarts (16.1 Liters), the transmission hydraulic system holds 120 U.S. Quarts (113.6 Liters), the fuel tank holds 80 U.S. Gallons (302.9 Liters), and the cooling system holds 41 U.S. Quarts (38.8 Liters). For the 1370 tractor, the cooling system holds 42 U.S. Quarts (39.7 Liters).
How to troubleshoot engine won't start?
If the engine won't start, check the starter drive for grinding or rattling noises, which indicate a faulty mechanism. Perform a no-load test on the starter to check for issues like a low free speed or high cranking current. Also, ensure the battery is at least 75% full charge and all connections are tight and free of corrosion.
What are the hydraulic system specifications?
The hydraulic system specifications include a Hydrostatic Power Steering pump capacity of 8 GPM (30.3 l/min) at 2000 engine RPM. The Remote Hydraulic System has a pump capacity of 20 GPM (75.7 l/min) at 2000 engine RPM, with a relief valve pressure of 1900 to 2050 PSI (133.6 to 144.1 kg/cm²). The Single Variable Flow Hydraulic System also has a pump capacity of 20 GPM (75.7 l/min) at 2000 engine RPM.
