The hydrostatic drive is where an 85XT, 90XT or 95XT gets expensive. This manual covers it in detail: charge pressure tests, drive loop flow loss limits and the servo valve neutral adjustment, with real numbers.

The rest of the machine is covered too. That means the engine and turbocharger, the Bosch VE injection pump, the loader valve and bucket cylinders, brakes, the chain case, ROPS, and the backhoe, trencher and track options. Guessing at a weak drive or a drifting bucket can cost you a weekend and a pump you didn't need.

The book is split by system, so you go straight to Power Train or Hydraulics. The hydraulic schematic foldout is at the back on pages 1434-1435. The electrical schematic, with wire circuits and fuses, is on page 1436.

Case 85XT, 90XT, 95XT Common Problems This Manual Covers

Bucket drifts toward dump with the loader valve in neutral

Page 837 lists three causes. The first is worn bucket cylinder packing. The second is excessive port leakage in the loader control valve. The third is a stuck metering spool in the leveling valve. Work through each one using the hydraulic troubleshooting procedures before you pull a cylinder off the machine for a reseal.

Manual Section: Hydraulic System Troubleshooting p. 837
Bucket drifts toward rollback on self-leveling machines

Page 898 covers this exact drift. Suspects are a stuck-open pilot operated check valve, bad bucket cylinder packing, a bad B2 port circuit relief/anti-cavitation check valve, or excessive bucket control valve spool leakage. Test the valves first, because they are cheaper to fix than a cylinder rebuild.

Manual Section: Bi-Directional Self-Leveling System Troubleshooting p. 898
Machine lacks pushing power or one side feels weak

Start with the 'Machine Does Not Have Enough Power' chart on page 551. Then measure charge pressure against 22 to 26 bar (320 to 380 psi) at high idle with hot oil. The Test Analysis on page 556 splits closed loop leakage between pump and drive motor. Compare your loss to the 7.57 litre/min (2gpm) limit on page 561.

Manual Section: Hydrostatic Troubleshooting p. 551
Engine loses power during operation

The fuel injectors section on page 241 says faulty injectors can cause power loss during operation. The same Fuel System chapter covers the fuel filters and the Bosch Model VE injection pump. That lets you check filters and fuel supply first, then move on to injector service.

Manual Section: Fuel System - Fuel Injectors p. 241

Frequently Asked Questions

My machine feels weak pushing into a pile. Is it the hydrostatic pump or the drive motors?

Start with the 'Machine Does Not Have Enough Power' troubleshooting on page 551. Then check charge pressure. Spec is 22 to 26 bar (320 to 380 psi) at high idle with oil at least 49°C (120°F). The Test Analysis on page 556 uses charge pressure and auxiliary flow readings to tell pump leakage from motor leakage. Page 561 lists maximum drive loop flow loss as 7.57 litre/min (2gpm). p. 556

The tires turn with the levers in neutral. Can I adjust that out myself?

In most cases, yes. Page 554 covers the hydraulic neutral adjustment of the servo control valve. First raise and block the unit, then unplug the Neutral Override Solenoid connector and fit jumper wires. Run the engine at full throttle. Center the neutral adjusting screw between the marks where the tires just begin to rotate. p. 554

How much oil goes in each chain case, and what chain does my model use?

Each side holds 7.6 litres (8.0 quarts), per page 18. The 90XT and 95XT run 120 size chain and the 85XT uses 100 size, per page 519. When you refit an axle housing, torque the mounting nuts to 223 to 265 Nm (165 to 190 pound-feet). That figure is on page 563. p. 519

What should the main relief read on the loader valve and the backhoe valve?

The loader control valve main relief is 203 to 210 bar (2950 to 3050 psi). The D-125 backhoe control valve is set lower, at 166 to 172 bar (2400 to 2500 psi). Both figures are on page 906. Check relief pressure before you condemn a pump for slow lift arms. p. 906

What are the fluid capacities for the 85XT, 90XT and 95XT?

Hydraulic system capacity is 62.4 litres (16.5 gallons) on the 85XT, 64.4 litres (17.0 gallons) on the 90XT and 66.2 litres (17.5 gallons) on the 95XT. Crankcase oil with a filter change is 10.4 litres (11.0 quarts). The cooling system holds 16.5 litres (17.5 quarts). All of these are on page 18, along with fuel tank sizes. p. 18
