This is the factory repair manual for the CLAAS Celtis 426, 436 and 446, the Renault-built utility tractors from the mid-2000s with the John Deere PowerTech DPS engine and B41 gearbox. It covers the machine end to end: engine and injection checking, LuK clutch and gearbox overhaul, rear axle, differential and service brakes, driven and undriven front axles, front and rear PTO, linkage and loader, the full hydraulic circuit with spool valves and hydrostatic steering, plus wiring, instrument panel and cab. These tractors are old enough now that dealers shrug at them, and a complete workshop manual for the Celtis line is genuinely hard to find. This is the book the dealer techs used, with the procedures and specifications laid out step by step.

CLAAS 426-446 Common Problems This Manual Covers

Overheating, oil contamination in the coolant header tank, or coolant loss under load

Pressure test the cooling system and inspect the head gasket. The Engine & Injection (DPS) section covers cylinder head removal, inspection for cracks, gasket replacement and correct reassembly, plus checking the radiator and cooling circuit before you condemn the head.

Manual Section: Engine & Injection (DPS)
Rough running, hard starting or power loss from a tired injection system

Work through the injection sheet checking procedure before swapping injectors on guesswork. The Engine & Injection section shows how to test the fuel injection system on the DPS engine, isolate a bad injector or pump problem, and set everything back to specification.

Manual Section: Engine & Injection (DPS)
Clutch slipping or dragging, especially on 2WD tractors used hard on the PTO

Split the tractor and inspect the LuK clutch following the Gearbox B41 & Clutch section. It covers plate replacement, release mechanism inspection and adjustment, plus the B41 gearbox internals if wear has gone past the clutch itself.

Manual Section: Gearbox B41 & Clutch
Weak or jerky hydraulics, lift arms dropping, heavy or wandering steering

Run the pressure tests in the Hydraulics, Spool Valves & Steering section to separate a worn pump from sticking spool valves or a tired steering unit. The section covers the main circuit, auxiliary valves and hydrostatic steering repair with the specifications for each test point.

Frequently Asked Questions

My Celtis has oil in the coolant header tank. Does this manual cover head gasket replacement on the DPS engine?

Yes. Oil in the coolant on these tractors usually means a failed head gasket or, less often, a cracked head, and the engine section walks you through teardown, head removal, inspection and reassembly on the John Deere PowerTech DPS engine with the tightening sequences and specifications you need. Do the job right the first time, because pulling the head twice on a tractor this size is a miserable weekend.

Does it include torque specs for the engine and driveline?

Yes, torque values and tightening sequences are given in the relevant repair procedures for the engine, gearbox, axles and hydraulics. That matters on the DPS engine especially, where head bolt sequence and spec are not something you want to guess at. You will not find these numbers reliably on forums, and guessing is how studs get stretched.

I have a slipping clutch on my Celtis 436. Is the clutch and gearbox work covered?

Fully. There is a dedicated section on the B41 gearbox and the LuK clutch, including splitting the tractor, clutch removal and replacement, adjustment and gearbox repair. Clutch plates wear fast on 2WD models doing heavy PTO work, so if yours is slipping under load, this section is where you start.

Does the manual cover the hydraulics and spool valves? My lift arms are jerky and pressure seems down.

Yes. The hydraulics section covers the main circuit, auxiliary spool valves and hydrostatic steering, with test and repair procedures. Erratic implement operation on a high-hour Celtis is usually worn pump seals or dirty fluid, and the manual gives you the pressure checks to prove which one before you spend money on parts.

Will this work for the front loader and front PTO versions?

Yes. Front equipment gets its own coverage: front power take-off, front linkage and loader, and the pneumatic brake system. The front axle section handles both driven (4WD) and undriven (2WD) axles, including steering knuckles, so whichever configuration you have, the procedures are in here.
