Fiat issued workshop manual 603.S4.201 for its 780 and 880 tractors, and this is that book: 216 pages covering both models in two wheel drive and DT four wheel drive form. As a Fiat 780 workshop manual PDF, it walks you through the wet clutch (Ferodo, Luk and o.m.g. types), gearbox and splitter, rear bevel drive with differential lock, brakes, PTO, and the lift unit with draught control. Hydraulic schematics map the power steering and lift circuits, a fault finding chart traces steering complaints back to the pump or valves, and wiring diagrams lay out charging, starting and lighting. Set your injectors to release at 230 ± 5 kg/cm² and expect 3 to 4 kg/cm² oil pressure at governed speed. A guessed pressure figure costs you an injection pump. Buy it once, keep it for the life of the tractor, and bookmark or keyword your way to any section before the weather turns.

Fiat 780, 780 DT, 880, 880 DT Common Problems This Manual Covers
Fiat 780 DT cranks but won't start, dies randomly after running ten minutes
Drain the tank and clear the fuel cock screen first; a plugged tap outlet starves these engines long before the pump gives trouble. Renew both fuel filters and bleed the system, pages 31 through 39. If it still cuts out, check the start-retard solenoid link free travel on page 210: 1 to 2 mm (.04 to .08 in).
Manual Section: Engine - Fuel System p. 31Three-point hitch lifts slowly or drops under load, implements won't stay raised in transport
Verify hydraulic oil level first, then pull the lift filter; renew the paper cartridge every 400 hours, sooner in dusty conditions, per page 181. Work through the valve check procedure on page 176 to test the relief and cylinder safety valves. If pressure holds, run the lift pump output test before splitting anything.
Manual Section: Lift Unit - Specification and Data p. 176Gears grind going into second and third, shifting gets worse once the transmission warms up
Check gearbox oil level and condition before anything else; burnt or thinned oil kills synchros fast. Adjust the shift linkage next. If grinding continues, split the tractor and inspect the synchromesh springs per page 104: camber should measure 1.5 mm (.06 in), and each spring must take a 1.4 to 1.55 kg (3 to 3 1/2 lb) load without collapsing.
Manual Section: Power Train - Gearbox and Splitter p. 104Engine down on power, blows blue smoke and uses oil under heavy drawbar loads
Test compression using the procedure on page 42; anything below 22 kg/cm2 (330 psi) means the top end is tired. Worn valve guides pull oil down the intake valves and smoke hardest under load. Guide dimensions for each model are on pages 28 and 29; press in new guides and ream the fitted bore before cutting the seats.
Manual Section: Engine - Description - Performance Data - to Remove - to Refit p. 42Hard starting when cold, white exhaust smoke and rough uneven idle after warm up
Remove the injectors and have them pop tested. On 780 and 780 DT models release pressure should read 230 ± 5 kg/cm² (3,270 ± 70 psi); page 12 lists the figure for each model, so match the spec to your serial plate. Replace any nozzle that dribbles or throws a solid stream. Removal and refitting are covered on pages 31 through 39.
Manual Section: Engine - Fuel System p. 31Frequently Asked Questions
What is the torque specification for the cylinder head nuts on the Fiat 880 tractor?
The cylinder head nuts on the 880 tractor must be tightened in three successive stages. The final torque value is 23 kgm (166 lb ft). p. 47
What is the torque specification for the wheel rim bolts on the Fiat 780/880?
The torque specification for the wheel rim bolts (C4) is 26.5 kgm (192 lb ft). p. 80
What is the correct valve clearance for the 880 tractor engine when performing a timing check?
For the 880 tractor engine, the valve clearance for a timing check is 0.25 mm (.010 in) for both inlet and exhaust valves. p. 11
What is the recommended engine oil capacity for the 880 tractor?
The engine oil capacity for the 880 tractor (including filter and lines) is 15.6 litres (27 1/2 pints). p. 21
What is the correct procedure for bleeding the brake system on the Fiat 780/880?
To bleed the brake system, depress the L.H. brake pedal to full stroke, hold it depressed, and back off the bleed screw (C) by half a turn to allow air to escape. Repeat this operation until the fluid is free from air bubbles, then repeat for the R.H. brake circuits. p. 136
