Moving a disabled machine and helping a cold engine start each get their own instructions in the J I Case 580E operator manual PDF, a 179-page book (OEM ID 9-8893) for the 580E and 580SE loader backhoe. The instrument cluster, loader and backhoe controls, the Case coupler, return-to-dig and lifting with the backhoe come first; then the Maintenance and Lubrication chapter lists fuel, fluids and lubricants, grease fittings, and service for the engine, hydraulics, power shuttle, transaxle and brakes. Safety rules and specifications round out the book. Refill the hydraulic reservoir with 12.5 gallons (47.3 litres) after a filter change, and hold compressed air to 30 psi (206 kPa) when you clean the air filter. Your walk-around inspection and the run-in maintenance chart are both set out. Serial number locations for the engine, transaxle and front drive axle help you quote the right numbers when ordering parts, and the bookmarked, text-searchable PDF finds them fast.

J I Case 580E, 580SE Common Problems This Manual Covers

J I Case 580E/580SE engine cranks but no white or black smoke appears at the exhaust pipe

Check the fuel supply first. Cranking should show white or black smoke at the exhaust (page 50). Fasten the seat belt before cranking. Confirm the parking brake is engaged and the shuttle and transaxle levers are in Neutral, then push the foot throttle 1/4 down. Crank no more than 30 seconds, and let the starter cool three minutes between tries. If the tank ran dry, remove air from the fuel system following page 117.

Manual Section: Engine Starting Problems p. 50
Ether cold start system will not start the engine after two attempts in cold weather

Check the supply of ether in the cold start can, as page 53 directs after two failed attempts. The system only works on a cold engine. Hold the foot throttle 1/2 open while you crank. Before you replace the can, read its warnings. Sparks or flame near ether can cause an explosion, so keep cans out of high-heat storage (page 52).

Manual Section: Engine Starting Problems p. 53
Radiator coolant level low while the coolant reservoir level stays at the FULL mark

Inspect the hose between the radiator and the coolant reservoir for air leaks (page 114). Check with the engine stopped and the coolant cold. Hot coolant can spray out of the radiator. Let the system cool, turn the cap to the first notch, and wait until all pressure releases before you remove it. Top up with 50% ethylene glycol and 50% water to the radiator opening.

Manual Section: Cooling System Troubleshooting p. 114
Engine coolant looks dirty or has a rust color when checked at the reservoir

Drain, clean and replace the coolant following page 115. With the coolant cold, open the radiator drain valve and pull the block drain plug. Run the cleaning solution through, then flush with clean water. Remove the grille and clear the radiator with compressed air or water. Refill to the radiator opening and the reservoir FULL mark. After warm-up, check the level at the reservoir only, and never pull a hot radiator cap (page 114).

Manual Section: Cooling System Troubleshooting p. 115
Engine power decreased and water or sediment shows when draining the first stage fuel filter

Open the fuel tank drain valve until the water and sediment are gone (page 116). Then replace both fuel filters following page 117. Hand tighten each filter 1/2 to 3/4 turn after the gasket makes contact, and never tighten them with the strap wrench. Refill the tank with the engine stopped and no flame or smoking nearby (page 116). Finally, bleed air at the intake manifold and injection pump screws.

Manual Section: Fuel System Troubleshooting p. 117
Engine oil pressure or alternator warning lamp does not light with key switch ON

Verify that both the oil pressure and alternator lamps light at key ON (page 50). Push the warning lamp switch right to test the two filter lamps. If a lamp stays dark, disconnect the battery ground cable first (page 119). Then turn the lamp assembly counterclockwise and replace the bulb with a No. 168 (page 118).

Manual Section: Electrical System Troubleshooting p. 118
