The mechatro control system is the hardest part of these machines to work on blind, and this book gives it a full section. It covers the mechatro controller, the multi display, the 33-item self-diagnosis screen, the 25-item service diagnosis screen and the trouble history.
From there it covers the boom, arm, bucket, swing and travel hydraulic circuits, along with the pumps, control valve, swing and travel units. It also has electric circuit diagrams, the A/C system, attachment and upper structure removal, and travel motor and undercarriage work. SK290LC and SK330LC figures are listed separately throughout.
For the SK330LC it also includes an electrical parts section: the controller group, upper electrical assembly and harness assemblies with part numbers and wire tables. That helps you identify a harness or relay before you order it.

Kobelco SK290LC, SK330LC Common Problems This Manual Covers
Travel won't start, is slow to pick up, responds late or has poor power
Start by measuring travel relief pressure against the 350 kgf/cm² (4980 psi) spec. The control valve troubleshooting traces this to the main relief valve. Look for foreign matter between the main poppet and seat, a sticking poppet, a broken or deformed spring, a clogged poppet throttle or a loose adjusting screw. Disassemble and clean it, smooth sticking parts with an oil stone and replace the spring. Then readjust and tighten the lock nut to the specified torque.
Manual Section: Disassembly and Assembly: Attachment and Upper Structure p. 683Machine won't travel straight while the attachment is working at the same time
The control valve troubleshooting points to the travel straight valve or the neutral cut valve. Typical causes are a sticking spool, a broken spring or a clogged small hole. Measure pilot pressure first. The machine spec is 50 kgf/cm² (710 psi). Then smooth the spool with an oil stone, replace the spring and clear out the foreign matter.
Manual Section: Disassembly and Assembly: Attachment and Upper Structure p. 683Engine overheats after long service with no cooling system cleaning
The cooling chapter is blunt about this. If you run the radiator for long periods without cleaning the cooling system, rust and scale build up and the engine overheats. Clean the system periodically. Let the coolant cool and loosen the pressure cap before you drain it. Capacity is 13 L (3.4 gal) in the engine body and 21 L (5.5 gal) in the radiator.
Manual Section: Engine Shop Manual (Mitsubishi 6D34-T) p. 1073Multi display flags a pressure sensor, governor motor or valve fault
Open the self-diagnosis display described in the Mechatro Control System section. It reports failures across 33 controller I/O items, covering low pressure sensors, the governor motor, proportional valves and solenoid valves. Check the trouble history display for earlier faults. Then follow the mechatro control part of the Troubleshooting section and use the Electric System circuit diagrams to trace the wiring.
Manual Section: Mechatro Control System p. 252Frequently Asked Questions
What main relief pressure should the gauge read on an SK290LC or SK330LC?
Both models use the same implement and travel setting: 350 kgf/cm² (4980 psi). Power boost / heavy lift raises it to 385 kgf/cm² (5470 psi). Swing is 280 kgf/cm² on both, listed as 3980 psi for the SK290LC and 3990 psi for the SK330LC. Pilot pressure is 50 kgf/cm² (710 psi). The Maintenance section has the main relief pressure adjustment and the test procedures. p. 47
My multi display keeps alternating CPU ROM DATA FAILURE and CPU MECHATRO SET ERROR. Does the manual cover that?
Yes. Those two messages show by turns on the multi display, and the Mechatro Control System section explains the screens they appear on. The self-diagnosis screen checks 33 controller I/O items, including low pressure sensors, the governor motor, proportional valves and solenoid valves. The trouble history screen shows what was logged before you got to the machine. The Troubleshooting section then splits faults into mechatro, hydraulic, electric and engine. p. 182
Is the engine shop manual written for the 6D16 in my machine?
No, and you should know that before you buy. The bundled engine shop manual is Mitsubishi's 6D34-T edition, written for the SK210LC/SK250LC. Your SK290LC carries the 6D16-TLEC and the SK330LC carries the 6D16-TLEB. The Specifications section does list the 6D16 figures: 7.545 liter displacement, 118 mm x 115 mm bore and stroke, and rated output and torque for each model. p. 917
How much oil goes in the travel reduction gear?
The SK290LC takes 7.5 L. The SK330LC takes 10.5 L (2.8 gal), and that figure is tied to the LC15V00005F1 unit. Confirm which unit is on your machine before you fill it. Service intervals are in the standard maintenance time table in the Maintenance section. p. 743
What weight do I plan for when hauling or lifting a Kobelco SK290LC, SK330LC excavator?
With 800 mm (31.5 in) shoes, operating weight is 30,000 kg (66,100 lbs) for the SK290LC and 35,300 kg (77,800 lbs) for the SK330LC. The Safety and Transportation section covers ground transportation, lifting the machine and shipping dimensions. It also warns that the machine can move unexpectedly with both tracks off the sprockets, so block it first. p. 44
