Before the R 922 swings its first bucket of the shift, you will be walking the inspection tour and checking track tension, and this 300-page Liebherr R 922 operator manual PDF (ID 11824095) is the hydraulic excavator's own guide to both. Maintenance fills more than a quarter of the book: the inspection and maintenance schedule, filling quantities and lubrication chart, slewing gearbox oil checks and Z System bucket tooth changes. Service code tables and fault, cause and remedy charts sort diesel, hydraulic, travel gear and electrical complaints; the control chapter handles quick coupler use, load lifting and the overload warning system. Fill the diesel engine with 26.4 L of oil, and run mineral hydraulic oil 3000 h between changes, or 6000 h with oil analysis. A remembered torque figure is how bolts let go. Bookmarked and text-searchable, the PDF shows you the oil grades and filter intervals before you order, so the first delivery is the right one.

Liebherr R 922 Common Problems This Manual Covers

Liebherr R 922 excavator hydraulic pumps drawing in air with unusual noise during operation

Shut off the diesel engine immediately, as the chart on page 201 directs. Check that the stop valve on the hydraulic tank is open, then check the hydraulic oil fill level and top up if it is low. The hydraulic tank holds 99 L, per page 214. Keep the engine off until both are corrected.

Manual Section: Hydraulic system p. 201
Hydraulic oil temperature too high and hydraulic oil warning threshold symbol shown on the display

Shut off the diesel engine when the hydraulic oil warning threshold appears (page 193). Keep the engine off before working on the cooling package to avoid burns (page 72). Clean a contaminated radiator following the chart on page 201. If the radiator is clean and the temperature still climbs, suspect the fan drive: keep the engine off and contact Liebherr customer service.

Manual Section: Hydraulic system p. 201
Track sagging badly with bad track guidance, track coming off or skipping during travel

Park the machine, secure it against rolling, clear the danger zone and shut off the engine before any maintenance (page 72). Adjust track tension if it is too low, following page 202. If the idler guide has excessive play, the idler or sprocket wheel is worn, or a correctly tensioned track keeps losing tension (defective tensioner cylinders or a leaking grease fitting), contact Liebherr customer service.

Manual Section: Travel gear p. 202
Starter does not turn or turns slowly when trying to start the diesel engine

Check battery voltage first: charge or replace a low battery, and clean and secure loose or corroded battery connections, per page 198. Before replacing a main fuse (F156 150 A, F157 400 A on page 208), switch off the battery main switch and disconnect the batteries (page 204). Use only an original fuse and never bypass it. If the starter still will not turn, contact Liebherr customer service.

Manual Section: Diesel engine and fuel system p. 198
Diesel engine running too hot according to the coolant temperature display while working

Shut off the engine before any maintenance to avoid burns (page 72). Check the coolant level and fill if low; the cooling system holds 27 L, per page 214. Clean or de-lime a contaminated radiator, then check the thermostat, following page 200. On a hydrostatic fan drive, check the fan speed. If the thermostat, temperature sensor or fan drive is faulty, contact Liebherr customer service.

Manual Section: Diesel engine and fuel system p. 200
Control elements give no function and the machine does not respond to joystick movement

Check the safety lever first: if it is in the upper position, lower it, then switch on the servo control, per page 201. Verify the slewing gear and travel drive brakes are released. On machines with the energy recuperation cylinder option, open the block ball valves slowly and carefully. If the controls still do nothing, the control is defective; contact Liebherr customer service.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I release hydraulic pressure on a Liebherr R 922?

To depressurise the hydraulic system, lower the working attachment to the ground, shut off the diesel engine, ensure the ignition key is set to 1, and move the safety lever to the down position. Then, carefully move the joysticks and pedals in all directions. For the hydraulic tank, you must also put in the securing pin and unscrew the breather filter by a maximum of one turn. p. 269

What are the replacement specifications for the hydraulic return filter on the Liebherr R 922?

The return filter cartridge should be replaced in dust-intensive applications every 500 hours and whenever the oil in the hydraulic tank is changed. For normal operation, it should be replaced once after the first 500 hours, then every 1000 hours, and also during every hydraulic oil change. p. 224

What is the procedure for checking the engine oil level?

Ensure the diesel engine is in the maintenance position. Pull out the dipstick, clean it with a lint-free cloth, and insert it fully. Pull it out again to check that the oil level is between the MIN and MAX marks. p. 258

What is the required tightening torque for the main fuses on a Liebherr R 922?

When replacing main fuses, you must tighten the nut and locknut to 16 Nm. p. 208

How often should the hydraulic oil be changed?

If using Liebherr mineral oil, the oil change interval is every 3000 hours without oil analysis, or every 6000 hours with oil analysis. If using Liebherr-PAO biodegradable oil, the interval is every 4000 hours without oil analysis, or every 10000 hours with oil analysis. p. 224
