A 6D14 on the stand with the head off raises one question first: what goes back, and to what figure. The Mitsubishi 6D14 shop manual PDF (OEM 97821-02030) answers it across 490 pages, covering six variants of the 6D14, 6D15 and 6D16 diesel engine family, naturally aspirated and turbocharged. Electrical work fills nearly a third of the book, with wiring diagrams tracing the alternator, starter and automatic stop circuits, while the engine chapter walks you through cylinder head and valve mechanism, pistons, connecting rods, liners and camshaft. Injection pump and nozzle service, turbocharger, lubrication, cooling, clutch and air compressor each get their own chapters, and troubleshooting charts link a symptom to its cause. Check each glow plug for 3.8 Ω at normal temperature, and bring the M14 head bolts to 78 N·m before the final 180° turn. Angle-torque head bolts forgive nothing. Print the bookmarked, searchable file and let your reassembly pages take the oil stains on the bench.

Mitsubishi 6D14, 6D15 & 6D16 Series Common Problems This Manual Covers

Mitsubishi 6D14, 6D15 and 6D16 diesel engine with low power output and abnormal engine noise

Check the low power output and abnormal engine noise causes before pulling anything. If the diagnosis puts the cylinder head on the bench, torque the M14 head bolts to 78 N·m plus a 180° turn and the M10 bolts to 17 N·m then 34 N·m per page 40.

Manual Section: Engine Troubleshooting
Engine will not start or is difficult to start because of a defective fuel supply

Drain water from the water separator and open the fuel filter air vent plug to purge air. Then torque that plug to 9.8 ± 2.0 N·m per page 161. On the separator, tighten the air vent plug to 7.8 to 12 N·m and the drain plug to only 2.9 to 3.9 N·m, following page 164.

Manual Section: Fuel and Engine Control p. 161
Injection nozzles suspected on an engine that knocks with unstable engine idling

Test nozzle injection pressure first. 1-spring holders should pop at 17.7 MPa per page 173. On 2-spring holders, check the 1st valve opening pressure at 16.67 MPa, the 2nd at 21.57 MPa, and prelift at 0.08 ± 0.02 mm on page 186. Adjust any nozzle outside those figures.

Manual Section: Injection Nozzle p. 173
Thermostat suspected on a cooling system that shows engine overheating or overcooling

Remove the thermostat and verify the valve starts opening at 76.5 ± 2°C per page 212. Measure valve lift at 90°C against 10 mm or more, following page 211. Replace any thermostat that misses either figure, and refill using the 13 L engine main body coolant capacity on page 193.

Manual Section: Cooling p. 212
Radiator and pressure valve suspected on an engine with excessive coolant loss

Test the pressure valve and replace it if the opening pressure falls outside 69 ± 15 kPa per page 201. Pressurize the radiator with 150 kPa of air and check for leakage. The spec is 0 cc, so correct or replace any radiator that leaks.

Manual Section: Cooling p. 201
Glow plugs suspected when the engine cannot be preheated and is hard to start

Measure each glow plug's resistance at normal temperature against 3.8 Ω per page 450. Test them cold, not right after a preheat cycle. Replace any plug that reads open or off that figure, then work through the remaining Starter Troubleshooting items for an engine that cannot be preheated.

Manual Section: Electrical System p. 450

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the torque specification for the cylinder head bolts on the Mitsubishi 6D1 series engines?

For the M14 cylinder head bolts, the tightening torque is 78 N·m (8 kgf·m) followed by an additional 180-degree turn. For the M10 bolts, the torque is 17 N·m (1.75 kgf·m) followed by an additional 34 N·m (3.5 kgf·m). p. 40
