Perkins 2300, 2306A-E14, 2306C-E14 Common Problems This Manual Covers

Perkins 2300 Series sudden coolant loss, no external leak, milky residue on oil filler cap

Pressure test the cooling system first; the leakage test procedure starts on page 121. If pressure drops with no external leak, pull the cylinder head and inspect the gasket and liner seats. The head weighs 148 kg, so rig a proper lifting device. Torque new head bolts to a final 450 Nm per the sequence on page 48.

Manual Section: Cylinder Head Assembly p. 48
Engine shuts down on high coolant temperature, ECM code 361-3, coolant pump weeping at drain hole

Check coolant level cold and test the filler cap before condemning parts. Run the coolant pump pressure test on page 138; the spec is 112 kPa. Replace the pump if it leaks at the drain hole. If pressure checks pass, test the thermostat and inspect the radiator core using the procedures starting on page 121.

Manual Section: Cooling System p. 138
Low oil pressure shutdown at operating temperature, ECM logs code 360-3, gauge reads low at idle

Verify actual pressure with a mechanical gauge before pulling anything apart; spec is 4.5 bar at rated speed (page 17). Replace the oil filter canister and confirm oil level and grade. Filter and oil pump procedures start on page 105. If pressure stays low, suspect worn main bearings; new cap bolts torque to 260 Nm plus 120 degrees (page 75).

Manual Section: Lubrication System p. 105
Loud tapping from the rocker cover at idle, engine runs rough and misfires

Check tappet clearances with the engine cold: 0.38 mm inlet, 0.76 mm exhaust (page 42). Adjust any that are out and recheck after a test run. If the tapping continues with correct clearances, remove the rocker cover and inspect the rocker levers and shaft; those procedures start on page 37.

Manual Section: Cylinder Head Assembly p. 42
Cranks fine but won't fire, or fires briefly then dies after standing overnight

Bleed the fuel system using the air elimination procedure on page 113, then watch for the symptom returning; air that comes back means a suction side leak. Inspect fittings and seals between tank and transfer pump, replace the fuel filter elements, and test the transfer pump per Operation 11-3 in the Fuel System section.

Manual Section: Fuel System p. 113

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I adjust the valve clearance on a Perkins 2300 Series engine?

The tappet clearance is measured between the rocker levers and the top of the valve bridge pieces with the engine cold and stopped. The inlet valve clearance is 0,38 mm (0.015 in) and the exhaust valve clearance is 0,76 mm (0.030 in). Detailed procedures for setting the engine to TDC and performing the adjustment are provided in Operation 3-4. p. 42

How do I check and adjust the alternator belt tension on a Perkins 2300 Series engine?

Use a Borroughs belt tension gauge to check the tension at the specified position. For a used belt, the tension should be 267 N, equivalent to 2,5 mm of movement with a force of 11,3 N. If a new belt is fitted, set the tension to 400 N, equivalent to 2,5 mm of movement with a force of 16,6 N. p. 146

What are the replacement specifications for the fuel filter elements?

The fuel filter elements in the primary and secondary fuel filter canisters should be renewed according to the procedures given in the User’s Handbook, TSD3449E. Ensure that the used filter elements and 'O' ring seals are discarded in a safe place and in accordance with local regulations. p. 118

What is the tightening torque for the cylinder head bolts on the Perkins 2300 Series?

The cylinder head bolts must be tightened in the specified sequence in three stages. The final torque for the bolts is 450 +/- 20 Nm (333 +/- 15 lbf ft). p. 48

What is the lubricating oil capacity for the 2306 engine?

The total lubricating oil capacity for the 2306 engine is 68 litres (120 UK pints). The sump maximum capacity is 60 litres (106 UK pints) and the sump minimum capacity is 45 litres (79 UK pints). p. 17
