A drum that won't vibrate halfway through a lift narrows fast to hydraulics or electrics, and this 197-page Bomag Service Training PDF (OEM 008 099 77) covers both ends of that hunt across the -3 series BW 213 and BW 214 single drum rollers. Circuit diagrams fill the back of the book, tracing supply, starting, cold-start systems, vibration and anti-spin control wire by wire, with a component listing to put a name to every relay. Hydraulic schematics walk the closed-loop travel circuit from servo control through the Poclain MSE 18 drum drive motor, and troubleshooting charts cover both travel and vibration circuits. Check charge pressure at 25 ±1 bar at high idle before you condemn your travel pump; vibration starting pressure runs 350 ±50 bar. When density won't come up, one missing pressure spec stops the whole fill. Bookmarked, text-searchable, downloadable now, so the roller makes its next pass.

Bomag BW 213 / BW 214-3 Series Common Problems This Manual Covers

Bomag BW 213 D-3 travels weak in one direction, drum drive jerky under load

Test charge pressure at the travel pump before condemning parts. At high idle you want 25 bar, plus or minus 1 bar; low charge starves the servo control and the machine crawls. Work through the travel circuit troubleshooting steps, and if you pull a multi-function valve, torque it back to 89 Nm.

Manual Section: Trouble shooting travel circuit p. 91
Vibration will not switch on or drops out when the drum loads up

Start at the vibration pressures, not the tank. Measure charge and starting pressure at the gauge ports first. Charge pressure fine but starting pressure zero points at the solenoid coil on the vibration valve, so check voltage and current there. Charge pressure fine but starting pressure only low points at the coupling on the vibration motor. If both pressures read low, check the vibration pump, then the flushing valve on the vibration motor, and only then the motor itself. On the BW 213 D-3 the vibration pump starting pressure is 350 plus or minus 50 bar (page 9).

Manual Section: Trouble shooting vibration circuit p. 125
Engine loses power, runs rough, then stalls after refueling from site tanks

Drain the fuel pre-filter water separator until clean fuel runs out; let approx. 0.5 l run out so the fuel above the element flushes it. Replace the pre-filter and main fuel filter elements together. The lift pump feeds the main filter at approx. 10 bar, so check the filter head for weeping, then bleed the system with the manual fuel pump and tighten the bleeding screw.

Manual Section: Deutz Diesel Engine p. 36
Steering turns hard or jerky, machine wanders and won't hold a straight pass

Tee a gauge into the steering circuit and check relief pressure; maximum steering pressure is 200 bar, listed on page 137. If pressure is low, suspect the steering/charge pump, since it also supplies charge pressure. Check the shock valves too, set at 200 bar, and inspect the articulated joint bearings for slop before blaming the steering valve.

Manual Section: Steering p. 137
Engine shuts down by itself mid-pass, warning lamp flashing on the monitoring board

Read the monitoring board before touching the engine. The board shuts the engine down on four red indicators: hydraulic oil filter and coolant temperature after 2 minutes, engine oil pressure and coolant level after 10 seconds. Charge control and air filter are yellow and do not stop the engine. The fault that caused the shut-down is saved and displayed, so read it first, then test that sensor circuit before replacing the shut-down relay. On the BW 213 D-3 the coolant system holds 16 l.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the replacement specifications for the hydraulic oil filter?

The hydraulic oil filter should be changed at least every 2 years, or after any repairs are performed on the hydraulic system. Ensure you use only original filter elements to prevent damage to hydraulic components. p. 25

What is the valve clearance specification for the Deutz engine?

The valve clearance for the Deutz engine must be checked and adjusted when the engine is cold. The intake valve clearance is 0.3 mm and the exhaust valve clearance is 0.5 mm. p. 37

What is the tightening torque for the multi-function valves?

The multi-function valves must be tightened to a torque of 89 Nm to ensure proper operation and prevent leaks. p. 74

What is the nominal charge pressure for the travel system?

The nominal charge pressure for the travel system is 25 +/- 1 bar. This pressure is measured at the charge pressure test port with the engine running at maximum speed. p. 102

What is the oil change interval for the vibrator housings?

The oil change interval for the vibrator housings is after the first 50 operating hours, then after 500 hours, after 1000 hours, and subsequently every 1000 operating hours. p. 26
