Setting up a tractor properly for every season comes down to 136 pages of Case factory guidance, and this Case 6388, 6588, 6788 operator manual PDF (OEM part 1258501C4) holds all of it. Draft control, position control and raise rate settings for the three-point hitch get their own chapter, followed by hitch category charts, coupling steps, swinging drawbar setup and the color code for your remote hydraulic outlets. A long stretch of the book goes to wheel tread tables for single, dual and wedge wheels, then lubrication guides, a preventive maintenance schedule and the Data Center's function pads and warning tellites. Before filling tanks or airing up tires, check the specifications chapter for capacities, PTO shaft speeds and front and rear inflation pressures, plus liquid ballast weights. Resetting dual treads by trial and error eats mornings. Bookmarks drop you straight into the wheels or PTO section, so you're back in the field before the weather turns.

Case 6388, 6588, 6788 Common Problems This Manual Covers

Case 6388, 6588, 6788 engine oil pressure gauge reading drops into the red band while running

Check the crankcase oil level right after you shut off the engine; page 24 says to shut it down immediately when the needle hits the red band. Add oil if necessary and restart. If the gauge still shows the same low reading, do not operate the engine; running without oil pressure destroys engine bearings. Call your dealer rather than risk the season.

Manual Section: Engine Oil Pressure Gauge p. 24
Red transmission oil pressure tellite stays lit after the engine has run a few seconds

Check the transmission oil level with the engine stopped as soon as the tellite stays on, and add oil to the proper level using the Lubrication section on page 107. Restart. If the tellite still comes on, page 25 says see your dealer. A flicker at low idle with the brakes lightly applied is normal, so don't chase that.

Manual Section: Transmission Oil Pressure Tellite p. 25
Data center coolant level warning light flashing red with the engine running

Check the cooling system only after the engine cools; page 31 says do not remove the radiator cap while the coolant level light is flashing. Once cool, check the coolant level and fill per the Cooling System section on page 48, but never pour coolant into the radiator if the engine is very hot. Clean the radiator and cooler fins while you're there.

Manual Section: Data Center Problems and Reaction p. 31
Red EGT warning light flashing with exhaust gas temperature above the preset value

Check the EGT reading by pressing the EGT function pad once, then again for the preset value. Inspect for a clogged air cleaner, restricted air pipes, a collapsed air hose and high coolant temperature, the causes listed on page 32. Never run above 1420 degrees F (770 deg. C), and idle below 550 degrees F (290 deg. C) before shutdown. If the cause stays hidden, see your dealer.

Manual Section: Data Center Problems and Reaction p. 32
Engine will not start after running out of fuel or replacing the fuel filters

Check that all plugs and fuel line connections are tight, because trapped air in the lines keeps the engine from starting. Open the fuel tank shut-off valve, loosen the wing nut on the hand priming pump behind the injection pump, rotate the locking strap away from the handle, then bleed the air using one of the two methods on page 45. Then get back in the field.

Manual Section: Fuel System p. 45
Data center function light flashing with an E shown at the right side of the display

Check which function light is flashing and press its function pad; an E on the right side of the display flags an electrical problem in that monitored system (page 30). Inspect that system for the cause. Before working on any part of the electrical system, disconnect the battery ground cables at each battery (page 53). Do not open or service the data center itself; if you can't find the cause, see your dealer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the transmission serial number located on a Case IH 6388, 6588, or 6788?

The serial number for the chassis, which includes the transmission and frame, is located on the right side of the rear frame. p. 7

What is the recommended torque for tightening the wedge wheel bolts on a Case IH 6388, 6588, or 6788?

The wedge bolts should be tightened to 400-500 foot-pounds (542-678 N-m) of torque. They must be tightened alternately in steps of increasing torque, and not all at once. p. 95

What is the required belt tension for the water pump, alternator-generator, and fan belt?

When using a belt tension gauge, the recommended range is 60-85 pounds (267-378 N) of strand tension. p. 50

What is the procedure for checking the hydraulic fluid level in the rear frame?

Check the oil level before operating the tractor. Ensure the oil level is up to the 'FULL' mark on the oil level gauge. Refer to the 'Lubrication Table' for the correct capacity and lubricant type. p. 108

How often should the hydraulic fluid filters be changed?

The hydraulic fluid filters should be changed after the first 10, 100, and 200 tachometer hours of operation, and then every 200 hours of operation thereafter. p. 108

What exactly do I receive with this Case 6388 Operator Manual?

All 136 pages arrive as one searchable PDF at checkout. Read it at the desk, then take the phone out to the machine.

Can I print just the pages I need from this Case 6388 manual?
