Case 800–815 Common Problems This Manual Covers
J.I. Case tractor engine won't crank after sitting all winter, battery seems dead
Pull both battery cables and check terminals for white or green corrosion buildup before you condemn the battery itself. Clean posts and clamps to bare metal, coat with dielectric grease, and torque clamps down snug so vibration can't loosen them again. Check electrolyte for freeze damage (cracked case, bulged sides) and replace if found. Test open circuit voltage before returning to service.

Check the troubleshooting procedures for unit-not-lifting and sluggish-action conditions before tearing into the pump. Inspect the filter housing and suction line connections for loose fittings weeping fluid, retorque and reseal with fresh O-rings as needed.

Run the operating pressure check before assuming the pump is shot. On models with the 800 psi relief valve you should read 725 to 825 psi at the gauge; anything well below that points to a worn pump or a leaking relief valve rather than the steering gear. Drain and inspect the filter element per the page 6 service interval (every 1,000 hours, sooner in heavy dust) since a loaded element will starve the pump and mimic low pressure.

Disconnect the shaft at the coupling and work it by hand to isolate whether the bind is in the shaft itself or downstream in the gear. Pack the renewed bushings with fresh grease before reassembly.

Check free travel at the pedal before adjusting the linkage blind. On Series 400-700B tractors you're looking for 1 inch of free play measured at the pedal pad; less than that means the clutch is riding and will burn up fast, more means it may not fully engage. Adjust the linkage rod to bring travel back into spec, then recheck with the engine off and pedal cold.
