Part of the Case Repair Manuals.
Every page of this 808-page Case IH 856 XL, D-155, D-179, D-206, D-239, D-246, D-268, D-310, D-358, DT-239, DT-358, DT402 Workshop Manual ties back to keeping these tractors turning, and it covers the 743, 745, 844, 845, and 743XL too. Open it up and you get full wiring diagrams for the electrical system, hydraulic schematics for the Sens-O-Draulic control valve and XL Control Centre, plus a dedicated troubleshooting section for injection pump and fault-finding work. You also get page after page of torque tables covering everything from final drives to the MFWD transfer gearbox. Set transfer gearbox bearing rolling resistance to 1.2-2.3 Nm with a torque wrench, or 9-15 kgf using the cord and spring balance method. Stop pulling specs off a forum thread and hoping they match your serial number. It's bookmarked by section, so you can jump straight to the system you're tearing into and get your hands back on the wrench.}

Case IH 856XL Common Problems This Manual Covers
Grinding noise from the front driveline with intermittent wheel slip under heavy pull
Remove the transfer gearbox per the disassembly steps on page 605 and check output shaft rolling resistance with a small torque wrench. Specified preload is 1.2 to 2.3 Nm, or 9 to 15 kg f measured with a cord and spring balance on page 618. Replace worn bearings and races if resistance falls outside spec before reassembling the clutch pack.
Manual Section: MFWD Transfer Gearbox B & C Family Tractors p. 618Differential lock pedal feels loose or won't hold engagement under draft load
Adjust the differential lock linkage with the transmission open, referencing the rod and lever settings. Confirm the detent bracket holds the pedal in the locked position without creeping back under vibration. If free play persists after adjustment, inspect the linkage pins and bushings for wear before pulling the transmission cover.
Manual Section: Differential Lock Linkage AdjustmentHydraulic lift arms drift down on their own with the tractor parked overnight
Work through the Sens-O-Draulic fault finding chart for a system that lowers on its own, cross-checking pilot pressure against the 100 + 10 bar spec on page 715. Inspect the main control valve spool and seals for internal leakage past the lowering section. Test the draft control valve separately to isolate whether the leak is in position control or draft control circuitry.
Manual Section: Sens-O-Draulic Fault FindingFinal drive housing runs hot with metal shavings showing up at the drain plug
Drain the final drive housing and inspect the driveshaft splines and bearings per the removal and disassembly procedure on page 690. Check torque on the housing retaining bolts against the special nut and bolt torques listed for this section. Replace any bearing showing pitting or discoloration rather than reusing it, since a failed final drive bearing will take out the ring gear next.
Manual Section: MFWD Final Drives B & Family Tractors p. 690Frequently Asked Questions
What are the recommended service intervals?
The generator should be inspected every six months to ensure long life. For the transfer gearbox, the filter screen (8) should be cleaned approximately 20 hours after a transmission repair, and thereafter as detailed in the Operator's Manual.
What fluids and capacities does this machine require?
The hydraulic system requires IH Hy-Tran or IH Hydraulic oil. The capacity for the basic system is 18 litres, with an additional 46 litres for the reservoir.
How do you fix case IH 856 XL front axle won't engage 4WD even with switch activated and engine running?
Check the shift solenoid in the MFWD filter and shift solenoid assembly starting on page 642. Verify battery voltage reaches the solenoid coil and confirm the plunger moves freely. If the solenoid tests good, pull the filter and inspect for debris blocking oil flow to the shift piston before condemning the accumulator. p. 642
How do you fix loader and steering response goes sluggish under load, pressure drops off after warm-up?
Verify system pressure against the Sens-O-Draulic technical data, steering pressure should read 100 + 10 bar per page 715. Remove and inspect the accumulator per the disassembly procedure starting page 628 for a ruptured bladder or lost precharge. Clean or replace the inline filter if pressure stays low with a known-good accumulator. p. 628
What format is this Case IH 856 XL & variants manual in?
You get a 808-page searchable PDF that downloads instantly after checkout. Open it on your laptop, tablet, or phone, and bring it right to the shop floor.
Are there any print restrictions on this Case IH 856 XL & variants manual?
Zero restrictions. The PDF is DRM-free. Print whatever sections you need to take out to the shop. Standard letter or A4 paper works.
Are electrical wiring diagrams included in this Case IH 856 XL & variants?
Yes, full electrical schematics are included with wire colors, connector locations, and circuit descriptions.
