Part of the Case Repair Manuals.
This 109-page Case International Shop Manual (models 1190, 1194, 1290, 1294, 1390, 1394, 1490, 1494, 1594, 1690) puts the complete tractor teardown, from front axle to turbocharger, right in your hands. Inside you get hydraulic schematics covering the rockshaft, remote valves, and steering circuit, plus a dedicated troubleshooting section for chasing pressure faults instead of throwing parts at the problem. Open to the specs pages and you'll find the steering pump bearing clearance set at 0.1-0.2 mm and mounting bolts torqued to 34 N.m, real numbers pulled straight from the factory text, not a forum guess. Relief valve minimum opening pressure runs 13800 kPa on 1390 through 1690 models, so you know exactly what your gauge should read before you start chasing a leak. No more splitting the tractor blind. Bookmarked by system, so you jump straight from Clutch to Hydraulics without hunting, then get back under the hood.

Case International 1190 – 1690 Series Common Problems This Manual Covers
Hard starting, low power, or rough running
Work the Diesel Fuel System section: bleed the system, renew the filters, and test the injection nozzles and the injection pump against the manual's specifications. Confirm the nozzle opening pressure and pump timing before condemning the pump, since a filter, air, or nozzle fault often mimics a failing injection pump on these tractors.
Manual Section: Diesel Fuel SystemRockshaft slow, weak, or will not lift
Use the Hydraulic System coverage: check the fluid and filters, then verify pump output and operating pressure against spec and inspect the rockshaft and linkage. Follow the test and troubleshooting procedures and adjustments before replacing the pump, since a low fluid level, blocked filter, or maladjusted linkage commonly causes weak or slow lift.
Manual Section: Hydraulic SystemClutch slips, drags, or is hard to release
Start with the clutch adjustment procedure, since free-play out of spec is the usual cause of slipping or dragging. If adjustment does not cure it, follow the tractor split and the clutch R&R and overhaul to inspect the disc, pressure plate, and release bearing, and replace worn parts to spec.
Manual Section: ClutchPower Shift transmission slips, is harsh, or loses a range
Check the transmission pump output and the valve pressures against spec first, and inspect the range gearbox, because a pressure or valve fault often mimics internal wear. Follow the assembly, R&R, and overhaul procedures if a rebuild is needed; the synchromesh transmission is covered separately, so use the section that matches your tractor's build.
Manual Section: Transmission (Power Shift)Frequently Asked Questions
What are the recommended service intervals?
The manufacturer recommends renewing steering system oil and oil filter after every 400 hours of operation. Diesel fuel filters should be changed at 500-hour intervals, and hydraulic fluid and filter elements should be renewed after every 800 hours and 400 hours, respectively. Engine oil and filter should be changed at 100-hour intervals. p. 23
What fluids and capacities does this machine require?
For Models 1190, 1194, 1290, 1294, 1390, 1394, the cooling system capacity is 8.5 liters (9 qts.), crankcase with filter is 6.25 liters (6.6 qts.), and transmission/hydraulic/differential case is 27.5 liters (29 U.S. qts.) using Case PTF Fluid or Hy-Tran Plus. Power steering requires 0.9 liters (1 U.S. qt.) of Case ET HB Fluid. p. 3
How to troubleshoot engine won't start?
If the engine fails to start, first loosen the high-pressure fuel line connections at the injectors. Crank the engine with the starter until fuel is discharged from the lines, then tighten the connections and start the engine. If the starter solenoid fails to hold the drive in engaged position, the hold-in coil circuit is faulty. p. 44
What are the valve clearance specifications?
The cold valve clearance for all models is specified as 0.25 mm (0.010 in.). This clearance should be adjusted with the engine cold, following specific procedures for three, four, and six-cylinder engines. p. 3
