Need the factory book for your Case/international 5120, 5130, or 5140? This 134-page Shop Manual walks the whole tractor, front axle through parking brake, without padding the pages with fluff. Inside you get full R&R and overhaul procedures for the powershift transmission and synchromesh range unit, a troubleshooting section for the hydraulic control valve, and calibration steps for the digital instrument cluster. You also get complete axle, differential, and final drive teardown coverage for both 2WD and 4WD setups. Torque the tie rod end nut to 230 N.m on 4WD models, and set steering knuckle end play at 0.1 mm before you button the front axle back up. No more flipping through a stack of loose printouts trying to find the right page. This one's bookmarked by system, so you jump straight to the section you need and get back under the tractor.

Case IH 5120 / 5130 / 5140 Common Problems This Manual Covers

Case IH 5120/5130/5140 front wheel drive axle binds or fails to engage smoothly under load

Inspect the axle main member pivot pin for excessive play. On 4WD models the upper and bottom pivot pin cap screws torque to 137 N.m (100 ft.-lbs.) per page 11. Check tie rod ends for wear and torque the tie rod end nut to 230 N.m (170 ft.-lbs.) at the steering arm. Verify the front drive clutch engages fully before suspecting the differential.

Manual Section: Axle Main Member, Steering Knuckles, Tie Rod & Toe-In, Wheel Bearings p. 11
Steering knuckle has excessive play or steering feels loose after minor loads

Measure steering knuckle end play with a dial indicator. On 2WD models replace the bushings if play exceeds 0.1 mm (0.004 in.), as specified on page 8. Torque the steering arm clamping bolt to 280 N.m (206 ft.-lbs.). Inspect the tie rod ends for looseness and replace any worn ball joints before returning the tractor to service.

Manual Section: Axle Main Member, Steering Knuckles, Tie Rod & Toe-In, Wheel Bearings p. 8
Front wheel bearing overheats or seizes completely after short periods of operation

Remove the hub cap and check for missing seals or contaminated grease. Repack the bearing and torque the wheel bearing adjusting nut to 100 N.m (74 ft.-lbs.) on 2WD models per page 7. Torque the wheel lug nuts to 300 N.m (220 ft.-lbs.) and spin the wheel by hand to confirm smooth rotation with no drag or heat.

Manual Section: Axle Main Member, Steering Knuckles, Tie Rod & Toe-In, Wheel Bearings p. 7
Axle main member pivot pin shears or fails during heavy two-wheel drive loads

Check axle main member pivot pin end play with a feeler gauge. On 2WD models it should measure between 0.1 and 0.3 mm (0.004-0.012 in.), as listed on page 9. Torque the Allen set screw and locknut to 150 N.m (110 ft.-lbs.) per page 8. Replace the pin if scoring or fatigue cracking is visible before reassembling the axle.

Manual Section: Axle Main Member, Steering Knuckles, Tie Rod & Toe-In, Wheel Bearings p. 9
Steering feels lumpy, steers slowly, or won't steer manually at low engine speed

Check the power steering troubleshooting chart on page 19 for no power steering, slow steering, or lumpy steering conditions. Verify engine low idle holds at 900 rpm; a low idle drops pump output and produces sluggish steering response. Inspect the steering cylinder for internal leakage and test relief valve pressure before condemning the pump.

Manual Section: Power Steering System Troubleshooting p. 19
Tires wear unevenly and toe-in appears out of adjustment on the front axle

Measure toe-in at hub height with a trammel gauge and compare front and rear readings. These axles adjust toe-in by rotating the tie rod components rather than by shims, as noted on page 106. Loosen the tie rod clamps, rotate to correct toe-in, then torque the tie rod end nut to 230 N.m (170 ft.-lbs.) at the steering arm on 4WD models.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the torque specs for engine head bolts on Case IH 5130?

For Case IH 5130 models, the engine head bolts should be tightened in four steps following the sequence in Fig. 30. The first step is 41 N.m (30 ft.-lbs.), the second is 90 N.m (66 ft.-lbs.), the third is 120 N.m (88 ft.-lbs.) for all bolts except numbers 4, 5, 12, 13, 20, and 21, and the final step is an additional 90° for all head bolts. p. 26

What are the torque specs for wheel lug nuts on Case IH Maxxum 5120?

For two-wheel drive tractors, tighten front wheel lug nuts to 300 N.m (220 ft. lbs.). For four-wheel drive tractors, tighten front wheel lug nuts to 185-220 N.m (137-162 ft.-lbs.). For rear wheels on flanged rear axles, tighten wheel nuts to 434-475 N.m (320-350 ft.-lbs.). For rowcrop axles, tighten wheel hub bolts in four stages, with the final stage at 300 N.m (220 ft.-lbs.). p. 7

What are the cold valve tappet gap adjustments for intake and exhaust valves on Case IH 5120, 5130, and 5140 models?

For all models, the cold valve tappet gap for intake valves should be 0.25 mm (0.010 in.) and for exhaust valves should be 0.50 mm (0.020 in.). These clearances should be adjusted with the engine cold. p. 4

What is the engine oil capacity with filter for Case IH 5120, 5130, and 5140 models?

The crankcase oil capacity with filter for Model 5120 is 10.4 L (10.9 U.S. Qt.). For Models 5130 and 5140, the capacity is 15 L (15.8 U.S. Qt.). p. 5

What is the specified injection opening pressure for Case IH 5120, 5130, and 5140 models?

The specified injection opening pressure for all models is 24,500-25,305 kPa (3553-3670 psi). This pressure should be checked using special test equipment. p. 4
