This is the factory service manual for the Case 1490, 1494, 1594 and 1690 tractors, the four cylinder diesels built at Case's Neuss plant from the late 1970s into the mid 1980s. It walks the full machine: engine removal, cylinder head and valve work, crankshaft and main bearings, turbocharger service, mechanical injection pumps and injectors, the Powershift transmission with its clutch packs, differential, final drives and PTO, brakes, steering including the MFD front axle, and the complete hydraulic system from pumps and relief valve to rockshaft and draft sensing. Electrical troubleshooting comes with wiring diagrams, including cab circuits. If you are keeping one of these tractors working instead of guessing at it, this is the book the dealer techs used.

Case 1490, 1494, 1594, 1690 Common Problems This Manual Covers

Powershift shifts rough, slips under load, or loses a range as the clutch packs wear.

The Power Train section covers Powershift transmission disassembly, clutch pack inspection and rebuild, so you can replace worn friction plates and seals and restore clean shifts instead of living with slip until the packs burn.

Manual Section: Power Train - Powershift Transmission
Three point hitch lifts slowly, drops under load, or the draft sensing does not respond.

The Hydraulic System section walks pump testing, relief valve service, rockshaft and lift cylinder repair, and draft sensing adjustment, letting you isolate whether the fault is pressure supply, a leaking cylinder, or linkage before buying parts.

Manual Section: Hydraulic System - Pumps, Relief Valve, Rockshaft, Draft Sensing
Turbocharger on the 1594 and 1690 leaks oil into the intake or whines from worn bearings.

The Engine section includes turbocharger removal, inspection and service alongside the lubrication system that feeds it, so you can check oil supply and rebuild or replace the unit before it feeds oil into the engine.

Manual Section: Engine - Turbocharger and Lubrication
Hard starting, smoke, or uneven running from tired mechanical injection equipment.

The Fuel System section covers the injection pumps, injectors and fuel tanks, including removal procedures, and pairs with the injector nut torque of 20 Nm (15 lb ft) at reinstall so you get the system back together correctly after service.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this manual cover rebuilding the Powershift transmission?

Yes. The Power Train section covers the Powershift transmission along with the clutch, synchromesh, differential, transfer gearbox, final drives and PTO. If your tractor is slipping between ranges or shifting rough, this is where you find the teardown and reassembly procedures rather than paying a shop to open the case blind.

What are the cylinder head torque specs for these engines?

Cylinder head bolts torque to 135 Nm (100 lb ft), rocker arm bolts to 61 Nm (45 lb ft), and manifold nuts to 34 Nm (25 lb ft). The manual gives the full tightening sequence in the Engine section, plus the standard cylinder head height of 88.65 to 89.15 mm (3.49 to 3.51 in) so you know how much material is left if the head has been surfaced before.

How do I set the valve clearance?

Valve clearance is 0.25 mm (0.010 in) for both inlet and exhaust. The Engine section covers the rocker arm assembly and the adjustment procedure. It is a feeler gauge job, no special tools, and worth doing on any of these engines that runs rough or ticks at idle.

My hydraulic lift is slow or will not hold. Does the manual help?

The Hydraulic System section covers the pumps, relief valve, rockshaft, lift cylinder, draft sensing, filters and remote valves. Slow lift on these tractors usually traces to a worn pump, a relief valve not holding pressure, or a plugged inlet filter, and the manual gives you the test and repair procedures to work through each in order instead of swapping parts.

Are wiring diagrams included, and do they cover the cab?

Yes. The Electrical section includes wiring diagrams, cab electrical circuits, troubleshooting procedures and coverage of the electrical equipment. These are 1970s and 80s mechanical tractors with no electronic engine controls, so faults come down to wiring, connections, switches and components, and the diagrams are what let you chase them with a test light.
