Part of the Case Repair Manuals.
Factory service manual for the Case 885, 895 and 995 utility tractors built from 1984 to 1994, including XL and MFD (mechanical front drive) variants. This is the workshop book Case dealers used: full teardown and rebuild coverage of the diesel engine, Bosch VE/VA rotary injection pump, clutch, speedbox and rangebox transmission, PTO, disc brakes, steering, and the mechanical draft-control hydraulics. You also get complete 12V negative-ground wiring schematics with printed troubleshooting charts, because on these tractors fault finding is done with a multimeter and a test gauge, not a scan tool. Specifications, special tools and all fluid capacities are up front, so you can check numbers before you order parts or drain anything.

Case 885/895/995 Common Problems This Manual Covers
Hard starting and black smoke from injection pump timing drift or worn injectors
Work through the Fuel System section covering the Bosch VE/VA rotary injection pump and injectors. It gives pump removal, timing and testing procedures so you set timing to spec instead of trial-and-error cranking, plus injector service to cure smoke and rough running.
Manual Section: Fuel System3-point hitch drops under load or responds erratically from worn draft-control linkage
Use the Hydraulic System section, which includes the hydraulic schematic, hitch adjustments, control valve and draft cylinder procedures. Adjusting the linkage to spec and checking the control valve usually restores a hitch that will not hold height or hunts constantly.
Manual Section: Hydraulic SystemCharging or starting faults from corroded wiring, grounds and connections on an aged harness
Trace it with the Electrical section's full wiring schematics and troubleshooting charts for the 12V negative-ground system, battery, alternator and starter motor. Use a multimeter and the diagrams to trace voltage drops through the harness and grounds instead of replacing parts blind.
Manual Section: ElectricalHeavy steering at idle from a worn power steering pump, or slipping clutch and PTO from lost free play
Fix heavy steering using the Steering section's pump removal, hand pump, front axle and steering cylinder procedures. For clutch and PTO wear, follow the Power Train section's clutch service and adjustment steps, and adjust pedal free play in Chassis and Accessories.
Manual Section: SteeringFrequently Asked Questions
My 885 is hard to start and blows black smoke. Does this manual cover the Bosch injection pump?
Yes. The Fuel System section covers the Bosch VE/VA rotary injection pump plus injectors and fuel tanks, with removal, timing and troubleshooting procedures. Pump timing drift and tired injectors are the usual cause of hard starting and black smoke on this generation, and the book walks you through setting timing correctly rather than guessing.
The 3-point hitch drops or responds erratically. Is the hydraulic lift covered?
Yes. The Hydraulic System section includes the full hydraulic schematic, hitch adjustments, control valve, pump, filter, remote valves and draft cylinder. On tractors this age the draft-control linkage wears and goes out of adjustment, and the hitch adjustment procedures in this section are exactly what you need to get the lift holding and responding correctly again.
Are wiring diagrams included? My charging system is acting up.
Yes. The Electrical section has full wiring schematics for the 12V negative-ground system, plus troubleshooting procedures for the battery, alternator and starter motor. These are mechanical-era tractors with no ECU or fault codes, so the printed schematics and a multimeter are how you trace a charging or starting fault. Corroded grounds and harness connections are the first place to look after 30-plus years.
What are the correct fluid capacities before I do a rebuild or service?
The General section lists them along with specifications and special tools. Key numbers: fuel tank is 112 litres (29.6 US gal) on XL tractors and 77 litres (20.3 US gal) on non-XL. Transmission holds 34 litres (8.9 US gal) on 2WD and 36.5 litres (9.6 US gal) on MFD models.
Does it cover the MFD front-drive system and the cab?
Yes. The Power Train section covers the MFD transfer gearbox along with the clutch, rear axles, speedbox, rangebox, PTO, disc brakes and park brake. Front axles and the steering cylinder are in the Steering section. Cab, hood, fenders, panels, air conditioning, and pedal and lever adjustments are in Chassis and Accessories.
