This is the factory illustrated parts manual for the Ford 5600 tractor, built 1975 through 1981. Inside are 836 pages of exploded diagrams with original Ford part numbers for every system on the machine: engine internals from the cylinder block down to the gasket kits, the rotary injection pump and fuel lines, gearbox and shifting mechanism, rear axle and differential, the full 3-point hitch and hydraulic circuit, brakes, wheels, sheet metal, cab structure and glass, seats, and both wiring harness variants (NH-NA and NHNA). It even separates the two water thermostat options (168 and 172 degree) and calls out the 4.20 inch block sleeves that fit the 5600, so you order the right piece the first time. If you keep a 5600 working, this is the parts book that belongs next to it.

Ford 5600 Common Problems This Manual Covers

3-point hitch leaks down or will not lift under load

Worn lift cylinder seals and a tired hydraulic pump are the usual suspects on these tractors. The Hydraulic System section (pages 253-344) breaks the lift cylinder, pump, and remote valves into exploded views with part numbers, so you can order every seal and fitting before you open anything up.

Manual Section: Hydraulic System, pp. 253-344 p. 253
Fuel starvation or leaks around the injection pump and lines

Fifty years of tank sediment and hardened lines take out filters, fittings, and rotary injection pump components. The Fuel System section (pages 46-117) covers the tanks, lines, filters, and injection pump piece by piece, with part numbers for the small hardware you always break getting old fittings loose.

Manual Section: Fuel System, pp. 46-117 p. 46
Running hot from a worn water pump or wrong thermostat

The Cooling System section (pages 181-193) shows the radiator, water pump, fan, and thermostat with part numbers for each. Page 6 lists the three factory thermostat ratings, 168, 172, and 188 degrees, so you can replace with the rating your tractor originally ran instead of whatever the parts counter hands you.

Manual Section: Cooling System, pp. 181-193 p. 6
Brittle, chafed wiring causing shorts and dead gauges

Original harness insulation goes hard and cracks where it rubs the frame and firewall. The Electrical System section (pages 384-532) maps both the NH-NA and NHNA harness variants along with the starter, alternator, and gauges, so you can order the harness that matches your tractor instead of guessing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use this to look up part numbers for ordering parts?

That is exactly what it is for. Every assembly is drawn as an exploded figure with the original Ford part numbers keyed to each piece, from a single head gasket to a complete wire harness — the two water thermostat options, for instance, are listed on page 6 with their own part numbers. Take the number straight to your dealer or cross-reference it with aftermarket suppliers. p. 6

Is this a repair manual with torque specs and step-by-step procedures?

No, and you should know that before buying. This is the illustrated parts catalog: figures, part numbers, and assembly breakdowns. The exploded views show you how everything fits together, which is half the battle on a teardown, but there are no torque tables or written repair procedures in it.

Does it cover both wiring harness versions of the 5600?

Yes. The electrical section (pages 384-532) includes both the NH-NA and NHNA harness variants, plus the starter, alternator, and gauges. It is the biggest section in the book, which tells you how much Ford changed the electrical parts over the 1975-1981 run. Match your serial range before ordering a harness. p. 384

What engine specs does it actually list?

The useful identification numbers are in here. Page 40 lists the four cylinder head gasket thicknesses (0.8mm, 1.1mm, 1.6mm, 1.8mm), page 31 gives the two oil pan gasket thicknesses (1.52mm and 3.3mm), and page 7 shows the two standard cylinder bores, 4.20 inch and 4.40 inch, so you can confirm which engine you have before ordering pistons or gaskets. p. 40

My 5600 has a cab. Is the cab covered?

Yes, in detail. Pages 633-741 cover the cab structure, glass, and doors, with the operator seat assemblies right behind it on pages 742-759. Sheet metal, the instrument panel, and the safety and ID decals each get their own sections too, so a cosmetic restoration is covered along with the mechanical work. p. 633
