Hitachi ZAXIS30, ZAXIS35, ZAXIS40, ZAXIS50 Common Problems This Manual Covers
Hitachi ZAXIS30 hydraulic functions slow and weak, all actuators sluggish after machine warms up
Check hydraulic oil level first; low oil is the fastest way to kill a pump. Test main relief pressure against the 20.6 MPa spec for ZAXIS30 and ZAXIS35 on page 51. If pressure reads low, adjust the main relief valve and torque its lock nut to 28 to 31 N·m per page 201.
Manual Section: Actuator Operating System Troubleshooting p. 51Machine loses travel power under load, one track runs slower than the other on slopes
Check track tension and dig packed mud out of the undercarriage before blaming the hydraulics. Inspect the travel motor drain hose for leaks and retighten the fitting to 39 N·m using the procedure on page 206. Swap travel lines side to side to isolate a weak motor from a control valve fault.
Manual Section: Travel System Troubleshooting p. 137Engine cranks slowly or starter will not rotate at all in cold weather
Test the battery under load before condemning the starter; these machines run a 52 Ah (5-hour rate) battery, listed on page 49. Clean and tighten both ground cables at the frame. Work through the starter voltage checks beginning on page 218 to isolate the relay, key switch, or starter motor.
Manual Section: Engine System Troubleshooting p. 218Hydraulic oil runs hot and digging power fades after an hour of steady work
Drain a sample of hydraulic oil; dark or milky fluid means contamination or water. Replace the return filter element, rated at 30 µm filtration on page 57, and blow the oil cooler fins clean with compressed air. Check every suction-side clamp; a loose line pulls in air and cooks the pump.
Manual Section: Troubleshooting p. 211Hydraulic oil seeping from swing motor drain hose and pipe joint O-rings
Wipe every joint dry, then run the machine to pinpoint the actual source before pulling hoses. Replace O-rings at weeping flanges instead of overtightening the bolts. On ZAXIS30 and ZAXIS35, torque the swing motor drain hose to 30 N·m, the spec on page 204. Route new hoses clear of rub points.
Manual Section: Operational Performance Test p. 204Frequently Asked Questions
What are the replacement specifications for hydraulic oil filters?
For ZAXIS30 and 35, the return filter has a 30 µm filtration rating and the pilot filter has a 30 µm rating. For ZAXIS40 and 50, the return filter (paper type) is 30 µm and the pilot filter is 30 µm. p. 57
What is the correct valve clearance for the ZAXIS30 and 35 engines?
The valve clearance for both intake and exhaust valves on the ZAXIS30 and 35 engines is 0.165 ± 0.02 mm when the engine is cold. p. 161
What is the specified injection timing for the ZAXIS40 and 50 engines?
The injection timing for the ZAXIS40 and 50 engines is specified as 15° to 17° before Top Dead Center. p. 164
What is the tightening torque for the main relief valve lock nut?
The lock nut for the main relief valve should be tightened to a torque of 28 to 31 N-m (2.9 to 3.2 kgf-m, 21 to 23 lbf-ft). p. 201
What is the standard engine speed for the ZAXIS30 slow idle?
The standard slow idle speed for the ZAXIS30 engine is 1100 ± 50 min-1. p. 161
