Stabil-TRAK trips up more wrenches than any other system on these telehandlers, and this JLG 6042 service manual PDF (OEM ID 31200353) closes its 230 pages with a full chapter on circuit operation, system tests, and boom interlock troubleshooting, after working through five models from the 6036 to the 10054. Electrical schematics trace the start circuit, charging circuit, and every solenoid and sender back to the fuse and relay panel. Hydraulic circuit drawings carry your pressure diagnosis from reservoir to cylinder, and boom service, three-section and four-section systems, extend chains, and wear pads, fills the largest chapter. Verify charging output against the rated 12V, 120 amp alternator on a 6042, then set size 6 ORFS fittings to 23 lb-ft (31 Nm). Sunday night, one machine down, nobody answering the phone. This bookmarked, text-searchable PDF is built for that hour, and the component terminology sections mean the part you order Monday is the right one.

JLG Skytrak 6036-10054 Series Common Problems This Manual Covers

JLG telehandler boom extend and retract slow, hydraulic functions weak or dead under load

Check hydraulic oil level first; a low tank starves the pump under load. Test main relief pressure, 2900-3100 psi (200-214 bar), using page 152 for the 6036 or page 158 for the 8042, 10042, and 10054. Replace a plugged return filter; it bypasses dirty oil at 25 psi (1,7 bar). Then run the boom troubleshooting chart.

Manual Section: Boom Troubleshooting
Engine shuts down or flags false coolant level fault soon after startup

Read stored codes with the flash-out procedure on page 209 before swapping parts. For a false coolant level fault on Tier 4F engines, remove the de-aeration tank level sensor and reinstall snug; over-torquing it is a known trigger. For low oil pressure shutdowns, check level: the QSB3.3 in the 6036 and 6042 holds 7.6 quarts (7,2 liters), page 28.

Manual Section: Engine - Cummins QSB3.3T/QSB4.5T p. 133
Engine cranks slowly or won't start in cold weather, batteries seem weak

Test the battery under load and clean both terminals before condemning the starter; corrosion alone will set low battery code 1. Check the 250 amp starter relay fuse and the 200 amp cold start grid heater relay, both covered on page 185. On the 6036 and 6042, verify charging from the 12V, 120 amp alternator, spec on page 24.

Manual Section: Electrical System p. 185
Hydraulic hoses weep oil at the fittings, fresh drips under boom overnight

Wipe the fitting dry and run the machine to pinpoint the true source before pulling hoses. Retorque suspect fittings to the chart on page 22: size 8 ORFS takes 40 lb-ft (54 Nm), size 12 takes 74 lb-ft (100 Nm). Replace the face seal O-ring on any fitting that ran loose; retorquing a damaged seal only slows the leak.

Manual Section: Hydraulic System p. 145
Wheel wobble or clunking from one corner, lug nuts keep working loose

Torque all lug nuts to 430-470 lb-ft (583-637 Nm) in a star pattern; the spec sits on page 25. Inspect stud holes for elongation and replace any wheel that has wallowed out. If the clunk continues, follow the axle and drive shaft troubleshooting procedures in the section starting on page 105.

Manual Section: Axles, Drive Shafts, Wheels and Tires p. 105
