Kawasaki FR/FS/FX 651V, 691V & 730V Common Problems This Manual Covers

Kawasaki FR691V cranks but won't start after winter storage, no spark at either plug

Check the spark plugs first: gap must be 0.7 to 0.8 mm (0.028 to 0.031 in.); clean or replace fouled plugs and torque them to 22 N-m (16 ft-lb). Test the fuel shut off solenoid with 12VDC per page 60; the plunger must retract cleanly. Then work the hard-start chart beginning on page 164.

Manual Section: Engine Troubleshooting Guide p. 164
Battery keeps going dead, charging system not putting out voltage while mowing

Verify battery cable connections and grounds before condemning parts. Run the charging system operational inspection on page 157 with a fully charged 12 volt battery, then measure stator coil resistance and unregulated stator output per page 158. If the stator tests good, check regulator resistance following page 159 and replace the regulator if it falls outside spec.

Manual Section: Stator Coil Resistance p. 158
Starter clicks or spins slowly, engine barely turns over on hot restarts

Check battery voltage and cable connections first, then follow the slow-rotation chart on page 168. Remove the starter and measure the carbon brushes; on FX models replace them once worn to the 6.0 mm (0.24 in.) service limit on page 132. Inspect the commutator for glazing and clean the grooves while it is apart.

Manual Section: Starter Motor Troubleshooting Guide p. 168
Engine runs hot and loses power under load, shrouds packed with grass clippings

Pull the engine shrouds (page 73) and the fan housing so you can clear packed clippings off the cylinder fins; blocked fins cook these air-cooled twins. Check the air inlet screen and service the air cleaner; on FX models replace the primary paper element every 250 hours. Verify oil level too, capacity is 2.1 L with the filter removed.

Manual Section: Engine Power Loss p. 165
Blue exhaust smoke, oil consumption climbing, weak compression on one cylinder at high hours

Measure valve clearance cold before tearing anything down: 0.10 to 0.15 mm (0.004 to 0.006 in.) per page 24, since tight valves mimic ring wear. If clearance checks out, pull the heads, inspect rings and bores against the service limits on page 79, and torque head bolts to 46 N-m (34 ft-lb) on reassembly.

Manual Section: Engine Troubleshooting Guide p. 167
Engine surges and dies at full throttle, fuel barely trickles to the carburetor

Run the fuel flow test on page 64 to verify pump output, and inspect the pump vent holes and filter for plugging per page 63. Drain the carburetor float chamber and check for water or dirt following page 21. On reassembly, torque the float chamber mounting screws to 3.9 N-m (35 in-lb) and the drain screw to 2.0 N-m.

Manual Section: Fuel Flow Test p. 64

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the torque specifications for the cylinder head bolts on the FR651V, FS691V, and FX730V engines?

The cylinder head bolts for these engines must be tightened to a torque of 46 N-m (4.7 kgf-m, 34 ft-lb). This procedure must be performed following the specified tightening sequence to prevent warping of the cylinder head. p. 83

What is the valve clearance adjustment procedure for a Kawasaki FX651V engine?

Valve clearance must be checked and adjusted when the engine is cold. The clearance for both inlet and exhaust valves should be 0.10 to 0.15 mm (0.004 to 0.006 in.). After loosening the locknut and adjusting bolt, insert a 0.05 mm thickness gauge and adjust until it begins to bind, then tighten the locknut to 11 N-m (97 in-lb). p. 23

What are the replacement specifications for the spark plug?

The standard spark plug for these engines is the NGK BPR4ES. The spark plug gap should be maintained between 0.7 and 0.8 mm (0.028 to 0.031 in.). p. 18

What is the engine oil capacity for these engines when the oil filter is removed?

When the oil filter is removed during an oil change, the engine oil capacity is 2.1 L (2.2 US qt). p. 29

What is the standard oil pressure for the engine?

The standard oil pressure for the engine is 294 to 588 kPa (43 to 85 psi) when measured at an engine oil temperature of 50 to 60°C (122 to 144°F) and an engine speed of 3,200 rpm. p. 102

What format is this Kawasaki FR651V & variants manual in?

This is a 169-page searchable PDF ready for immediate download. Works on any device, so pull it up on your phone while you're under the hood. No shipping, no waiting.

Am I able to print pages from this Kawasaki FR651V & variants manual?
