Perkins Eagle 800, Eagle Tx, Eagle Tx2000 Common Problems This Manual Covers

Perkins Eagle Tx hard starting after sitting overnight, cranks strong but engine will not fire

Check for air in the low-pressure fuel system and bleed at each point shown in the air elimination procedure on page 82. Replace both fuel filters if fuel looks dirty or waxed. Test suspect injectors on a pop tester; opening pressure is 250 bar per page 12. Retorque injector pipe nuts to 25 Nm when refitting.

Manual Section: Fuel System p. 82
Loses power pulling grades, black smoke under full load, turbo whine sounds different

Inspect the air cleaner element first; a plugged filter mimics fuel starvation. Check turbocharger shaft end float with a dial gauge against the 0.10 mm to 0.16 mm limit on page 68. Excess float means worn bearings; overhaul the turbo using the aspiration procedures starting on page 64, then check boost pipes for splits and loose clamps.

Manual Section: Aspiration System p. 64
White smoke or steam from exhaust, coolant level dropping with no external leaks

Test the cooling system with a pressure tester and check for combustion gas in the coolant. If the head gasket has failed, replace it and torque the head bolts in sequence: 136 Nm initial, 204 Nm intermediate, then +40 degrees final per page 11. Follow the cylinder head fitting procedure starting on page 18 and recheck coolant level.

Manual Section: Cylinder Head Assemblies p. 18
Loud tappet clatter from the rocker cover at idle and under load

Adjust the tappets with the engine cold: 0.25 mm inlet and 0.50 mm exhaust, both listed on page 50. Follow the tappet adjustment steps in the cylinder head service procedures on page 19. If clearances keep opening up, inspect rocker faces and valve tips for wear and replace worn parts before resetting.

Manual Section: Cylinder Head Assemblies p. 19
Starter cranks slowly when hot, intermittent click before the engine finally turns

Check battery voltage and clean cable connections before condemning the starter. If the motor is worn, dismantle it using the electrical equipment procedures starting on page 111. Measure brush length and renew any brush shorter than 15.9 mm. Replace the commutator if it measures below the 52.39 mm minimum diameter on page 115.

Manual Section: Electrical Equipment p. 111
