Your Steiger sits at the field edge with a hub weeping gear oil, or a clutch that slips every time you pull hard. This is the factory service manual for Series I through IV articulated tractors built 1976-1986, from the Wildcat and Bearcat to the Panther and KP 525 Tiger.
Guessing on these machines costs real money. Overfill a planetary hub, torque a ring gear by feel or reset clutch linkage in the wrong order, and you pull it apart twice.
The book covers Clark, Franklin/Dana and K598 axles, transfer cases, Fuller and Spicer transmissions, Allison removal and installation, brakes, hydraulics, wiring schematics and the cab. Get the numbers right the first time and have the tractor back pulling before the weather turns.

Steiger Series I-IV Common Problems This Manual Covers
Clutch slips and runs hot under load
Riding the clutch pedal causes slippage and excessive heat, so check how the tractor is being driven first. The Clutch section covers adjustment and troubleshooting for the 14 and 15.5 inch two-plate clutch. Do the internal clutch adjustment first, then reset the linkage for proper free-pedal.
Manual Section: Clutch - 14 and 15.5 inch two-plate clutch, adjustment, troubleshooting p. 339Brake pedal takes too much effort, or steering is too slow
Power brakes and steering have to be balanced on flow. If braking takes excess pedal pressure, you may need to increase flow to the master cylinder/booster unit. If steering is too slow, you may need to decrease it. Use the power brake coverage and the priority valve and test specifications in Hydraulics to set it.
Manual Section: Brakes - power brakes, dual stage master cylinder; Hydraulics - priority valve, hydraulic test specifications p. 1031Brake caliper drags or the lining binds
If the lining is not free to slide, remove it and find what is causing the binding before you reassemble anything. The Brakes section covers the park brake caliper and the caliper disc brake. On Series IV CS, KS, CM, KM and SM tractors the disc is 20 in. diameter and .75 in. thick, and brake fluid is SAE-J1703D.
Manual Section: Brakes - park brake caliper, caliper disc brake p. 991Transfer case is noisy after reassembly
Transfer case noise can come from how the yoke went back on. The manual says to install the yoke with the keyways parallel. Before you order bearings or tear it down again, check the assembly against the single speed drop box and 2-speed transfer case procedures in the Transmission section.
Manual Section: Transmission - single speed drop box, 2-speed transfer case p. 756Frequently Asked Questions
How much oil goes in a Steiger S-34 or S-40 axle?
A Series IV S-34 or S-40 axle takes 22 qts (20.8L) in the center differential and 5 qts in each wheel hub. The K598 axles are different. A K598 20/30 takes 8.5 qts (8.0L) in the center and 8 qts (7.7L) per hub. A K598 60/70 takes 15.0 US qts (14.4L) in the center and 3.7 US qts (3.5L) per hub. Check which axle is under your tractor before you pour. p. 11
What oil do Steiger Series IV axles take?
Series IV CS, KS, CM, KM and SM axles call for Steiger HD API-GL-5 80W-90 gear oil. Oils that meet API GL-5 and/or MIL-L-2105B also qualify. These axles are flow-through, so park on level ground before you check levels. p. 11
What is the torque spec for the differential case on the K598 axle in a Steiger Series I-IV tractor?
On the K598 00/10-20/30 axle, the differential case bolts go to 72 ft. lbs. (97 N.M.). The ring gear bolts take 220-250 lb. ft. (297-338 N.M.). Those two figures are far apart, and having them in front of you before you split the case is reason enough to own the book. p. 167
What is normal hydraulic control pressure on a Steiger?
The manual gives a Series III ST 210 as its example. That tractor shows 190 PSI control pressure at 830 RPM engine speed, rising to 320 PSI at approximately 2800 RPM. Look up the hydraulic test specifications for your own model before you condemn a pump. p. 1129
When should the clutch linkage be adjusted?
Only after the internal clutch adjustment has been made. Then you reset the linkage to get proper free-pedal on the 14 or 15.5 inch two-plate clutch. Keep your foot off the pedal in the field, because riding it causes slippage and excessive heat. p. 339
