Terex Atlas 372/373/374 & 1704/1804 Common Problems This Manual Covers
Terex Atlas 1804 hydraulic pump loses pressure, error code E02 flashes, boom and bucket will not move
Check the hydraulic fluid first; contamination kills these pumps. Warm the system to 40-60 °C, then run the calibration checks on page 82. On Series 373/283 machines, verify control pressure delta-P holds 0.7 bar per page 117. If it drops, drain the tank, replace the hydraulic filter, and inspect the pump seals for wear.
Manual Section: 1704/1804..373;283 Series p. 117Engine cranks but will not start or dies under load after cold nights
Measure fuel pressure at the pump; the Deutz spec on page 28 calls for 1.1 bar. On Series 374/284 machines, fuel pre-pressure should read 2 bar at minimum engine speed and 5 bar at maximum, off-load, per page 417. Replace the fuel filter and engine pre-filter if readings fall short, then load-test the battery before cranking again.
Manual Section: Deutz Engine p. 28Automatic central lubrication system blocked, no grease reaching ball slew ring or boom pins
Check the metering device for blockage using the troubleshooting steps on page 38; one plugged outlet stops the whole progressive system. Clear or crossport the blocked outlet, then exchange the Quicklub pump element if output stays low, torquing the new element to 30-35 Nm per page 39. Grease the ball slew ring manually until normal flow returns.
Manual Section: Lubrication p. 38Deutz engine runs rough with loud ticking noise from the valve train at idle
Adjust valve clearance with the engine cold: 0.3 mm inlet and 0.5 mm outlet, following the tappet adjustment procedure on page 30. Turn each rocker adjusting screw until the feeler gauge drags lightly, then lock the nut. Recheck the minimum engine revolution adjustment afterward, since tight valves often hide a low idle setting.
Manual Section: Deutz Engine p. 30Joystick response sluggish and travel speed weak or jerky on wheeled excavator models
Connect a pressure gauge to the pilot circuit test point with hydraulic fluid warmed to 40-60 °C. Verify travel pilot control pressure reads 24 bar on wheeled machines, checking and adjusting per page 167. If pressure runs low, inspect the pilot supply line for leaks and turn the adjusting screw on the pilot control valve until the gauge holds spec.
Manual Section: Pilot Control Adjustment p. 167Frequently Asked Questions
What are the common error indications for the Terex Atlas 1704 excavator's bar display?
The error diagnosis function can be called up by actuating the MEMO key (24) and the pressure cut-in stage key (14). Common error indications displayed by LEDs on the bar diagram include "Speed sensor short circuit" (LED 1), "Power for press switch failed" (LED 2), and "Cylinder head sensor defective" (LED 4). p. 118
How is the pilot control pressure adjusted on a Terex Atlas excavator?
The pilot control pressure can be adjusted by connecting an electronic measuring device to testpoint M5. The correct value of 25 – 27 bar is achieved by tightening or loosening the setting screw (1). p. 430
What is the tightening torque for the hydraulic pump element on a Terex Atlas 1704/1804?
When installing a new pump element, ensure the sealing ring (4) is properly fitted. The tightening torque for the pump element (2) is 30 - 35 Nm. Only use pump elements with a piston (6 mm dia.), indicated by the number "6" embossed on the face. p. 39
What are the tappet clearance settings for the Deutz BFM 1013 engine?
The tappet clearance setting for the Deutz BFM 1013 engine is 0.3mm for the inlet and 0.5mm for the outlet. This adjustment can be made with a cold or warm engine, but the cooling time should be at least 30 minutes and engine oil temperature must not exceed 80°C. p. 30
What is the resistance value for the water temperature sensor at 90°C for a water-cooled engine?
For a water-cooled engine, the water temperature sensor (EDP - No. 3667976) should have a resistance value of 83.3 Ohm +/- 7.0 Ohm at 90°C. The sensor has a nominal voltage of 6 - 24 V DC and a tightening torque of max. 20 Nm. p. 301
