Compression pressure testing heads the first work section in this 333-page Deutz 914 workshop manual PDF (OEM ID 0312 0441), written for seven variants of the 914 diesel engine family, from the F3L 914 to the BF6L 914 C/T. Cylinder head cards cover head removal, valve guides, seat inserts and valve recess; drive system cards take you through crankshaft, connecting rod, piston and rings. Later sections handle the turbocharger, injection pump, injectors, oil pump and cooling air ducting, and the Technical Data chapter collects bolt tightening torques with general engine data. Hold injector opening pressure at 200 + 10 bar. Valve guides use a 15 +0.056 / +0.045 mm outer diameter against a 15 +0.011 mm bore in the head. Perhaps your job is setting inlet valve clearance on a cold engine, which the specs put at 0.15 +0.05 mm. With bookmarks and a searchable text layer, you set that valve lash and the 40 to 48 Nm injection pump nut torque to Deutz's own numbers.

Deutz 914 Series Common Problems This Manual Covers

Deutz 914 compression pressure test shows more than 15 % difference between cylinders

Shut the engine down and secure it against restarting (page 11). Remove the cooling air guide sheets, injection lines and all injectors, checking valve clearance first per page 61. Fit the connector with a new sealing ring, connect the compression pressure tester and crank on the starter. Compare the cylinders against each other. Above 15 % difference, take that cylinder unit apart. Install new injection lines tension free and never bend them (page 64).

Manual Section: Compression pressure, checking p. 63
Inlet and exhaust valve clearance out of tolerance on feeler gauge check with engine cold

Shut the engine down, secure it against restarting (page 11) and let it cool to ambient temperature. Remove the cooling air guide sheets and cylinder head covers following page 69. Crank until the cylinder 1 valves overlap, then check with a feeler gauge against 0.15 +0.05 mm inlet and exhaust (page 26). Tighten the lock nut and recheck. Refit the covers with a new gasket bonded using DEUTZ KL 8.

Manual Section: Valve clearance, checking and adjusting p. 70
Injector opening pressure off target or nozzle failing tightness test on the nozzle tester

Remove the injectors, connect each one to the nozzle tester and check opening pressure against 200 + 10 bar from page 19. Run the tightness test at 20 bar below opening pressure (page 239). After 3 or 4 lever strokes the spring chamber fills, so undo the nozzle tensioning nut carefully before each test (page 237). Keep hands away from the fuel jet. It penetrates the skin and can cause blood poisoning.

Manual Section: Checking and adjusting the injectors p. 237
Injection pump positioning bolt will not latch into pump camshaft recess when checking commencement of delivery

Fit the pointer and graduated disc and turn the crankshaft to firing TDC of cylinder 1. Back it off about 90°, then turn it forward to the nameplate commencement of delivery value following page 220. If the positioning bolt will not latch, undo the four bolts on the injection pump gear/injection timing device. Twist the pump camshaft until the bolt latches, then retighten and recheck per page 222.

Manual Section: Checking and setting the commencement of delivery p. 221
Cylinder head bolts measuring over length limit during cylinder head removal and refit

Measure each cylinder head bolt against 217 ± 0.5 mm and replace any bolt past the 218.50 mm limit (page 27). Measure piston crown clearance and select the shim to match. Shims run 3.0 to 3.9 mm in 0.05 mm steps (page 104). Refit the heads in their labelled positions, then tighten the bolts crosswise to 30 to 45 Nm and follow with 45° + 45° + 45° + 30° per page 47.

Manual Section: Removing and refitting the cylinder head p. 91
Crankshaft main journals, crankpins or thrust surfaces worn when gauged during engine overhaul

Remove the crankshaft and check bearing journal hardness. Gauge the main journals and crankpins with an external micrometer at positions 1 and 2 in levels a and b (page 128), then check true running. Determine axial end float on page 130 as thrust journal width minus thrust ring width. If the crankshaft is worn, get a replacement shaft or have it repaired through DEUTZ Service Centers.

Manual Section: Checking the crankshaft p. 127

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I adjust the valve clearance on a Deutz 914 engine?

Valve clearance for both inlet and exhaust valves on a cold engine is 0.15 +0.05 mm. The adjustment procedure involves turning the crankshaft until the valves of cylinder no. 1 overlap, then adjusting the designated valves, followed by turning the crankshaft one full revolution (360°) to adjust the remaining valves as shown in the adjustment schematic on page 45. p. 26

What are the torque specifications for the cylinder head bolts on a Deutz 914?

The cylinder head bolts require an initial tightening torque of 30 Nm to 45 Nm, followed by a final tightening angle of 45° + 45° + 45° + 30°. p. 47

How do I set the injection timing on a Deutz 914 diesel engine?

The static commencement of delivery is 0% without an injection timing mechanism and 6% with one. Detailed procedures for checking and setting this timing using a positioning bolt or high-pressure pump are provided in work cards W 7-6-1 and W 7-6-2. p. 20

What is the correct V-belt tension for a Deutz 914 engine?

For first-time assembly, the V-belt tension should be 450 + 20 N. After running the engine for 15 minutes under load, the tension should be checked and adjusted to 300 + 20 N, which is also the required tension if the belt is being re-used. p. 17

What is the lube oil pressure for a Deutz 914 engine at low idle?

The minimum lube oil pressure at low idling (650 rpm) without engine-oil heating and using SAE 15W/40 oil is 0.4 MPa (4 bar) for most models, and 0.5 MPa (5 bar) for the BF6L 914 C/T model. p. 17

How quickly can I access this Deutz 914 Series Workshop Manual after buying?
