This is the factory workshop manual for the Fendt Farmer 409, 410, 411 and 412 Vario, built 2000 to 2006, the small-frame Varios with the Deutz BF4M 2013E engine and the stepless ML gearbox. It is organised by Fendt's own group numbers: Group 0000 covers specs per model, the Vario fault code table and calibration procedures, Group 1000 the transmission, clutch actuation, PTOs and Hydrodamp, Group 2000 the engine and injection pump, then front axle, steering, cab, EPC power lift, air compressor and brake fittings, and a large electrics section with fuses, wiring and circuit diagrams. Electronics, radar sensor and control units get their own group, plus the special tools list. Written for the workshop, not the showroom.

Fendt Farmer 409 / 410 / 411 / 412 Vario Common Problems This Manual Covers

Complete electronics blackout: Vario terminal dark, no functions respond anywhere on the tractor.

That pattern is a CAN bus fault, not five dead modules. The bus power supply is on circuit board A013 via fuses F040 and F041, so check those first. The Electrics section (Group 9000) has the fuse chart and circuit diagrams to trace the supply.

Manual Section: Electrics (Group 9000) p. 88
Transmission behaves oddly or throws a dotted-decimal fault code after clutch or gearbox work.

After work on the drivetrain the Vario needs recalibration: code 4007 for transmission ratio, 4001 for clutch pedal, 4003 for range control, 4009 for turboclutch. The calibration procedures and the fault code table are in the Tractor section (Group 0000), run via the A008 terminal or FENDIAS.

Manual Section: Tractor (Group 0000) p. 250
Residual pressure in the front suspension when servicing the front axle, even with the engine off.

The suspension accumulators hold 200 bar with the engine off and the suspension lowered, by design; the lock and lower command does not release it. Relieve pressure at stopcocks AV1 and AV2 on the central control block before opening lines. The manual prints this warning in the Tractor group safety instructions, ahead of the front axle work.

Manual Section: Tractor (Group 0000) - safety instructions / Hydraulics (Group 9600) p. 9
Hydraulics noticeably louder after a switch to bio oil, owner suspects pump wear.

The manual states this noise on bio oil is system related and explicitly not a fault, so no parts need replacing. The Hydraulics section (Group 9600) covers the general system, valve assemblies and external pressure supply if you want to check the 200 bar working pressure regardless.

Manual Section: Hydraulics (Group 9600) p. 149

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I read and reset the fault codes on a Farmer 400 Vario?

First thing to know: these tractors do not use E-prefixed codes, whatever the forums tell you. Faults come up as dotted-decimal numbers like 0.0.11 or 0.0.15, paired with an A-prefixed component ID such as A008 for the Vario terminal, A009 for the transmission control unit or A013 for the circuit board. The Group 0000 fault code table decodes them, and diagnosis runs through the A008 terminal or FENDIAS. Fix the cause and the code clears; the manual walks you through the table entry by entry. p. 86

The Vario terminal is dead, no display, nothing works. Is the terminal shot?

Do not order an A008 terminal yet. A bus fault on these tractors means no display and no functions at once, and the CAN bus power supply sits on circuit board A013, protected by fuses F040 and F041. Check those two fuses before you condemn any module. The Group 9000 electrics section shows the fuse assignments and the circuit diagrams to trace it properly. p. 88

Is there anything I need to know before working on the front axle suspension?

Yes, and it is a genuine safety trap. With the engine off and the suspension lowered, the front suspension accumulators still hold 200 bar, and this is by design - the lock and lower command has no effect on it. Before opening anything, relieve the pressure at stopcocks AV1 and AV2 on the central control block. The manual prints this in the Tractor group safety instructions; skip it and you will find out the hard way. p. 9

What is the wheel nut torque, and does the manual give calibration values after repairs?

Wheel nuts are 275 Nm. And yes, the manual covers the 4-digit calibration procedures the Vario needs after transmission or pedal work: code 4007 for transmission ratio, 4001 for the clutch pedal, 4003 for range control and 4009 for the turboclutch, all in the Group 0000 calibration procedures. p. 651

My hydraulics got loud after switching to bio oil. Is something failing?

No. The manual is explicit that louder hydraulic noise when running on bio oil is system related and not a fault. Do not start swapping pumps over it. The Group 9600 hydraulics section covers the system, valve assemblies and external pressure supply if you want to verify pressures anyway; max working pressure is 200 bar. p. 149
