Fiat 1180-1880 Series Common Problems This Manual Covers

Fiat 1180 hydraulic lift slow to raise, three point hitch won't pick up loaded plow

Check hydraulic oil level and condition before condemning hardware. Inspect the lift cylinder; piston clearance in the cylinder head must stay within .030 to .100 mm (.001 to .004 in), specs on page 285. If pressure still lags, pull the lift pump and measure gear end clearance using the procedures starting on page 304.

Manual Section: Hydraulic Lift Unit: Specification and Data p. 285
Clutch slips under load and pedal takes excessive force to push down

Measure pedal free travel first. On 1180 H, 1380, 1580 and 1880 units, set it to 25 mm (1 in), which leaves 1.5 mm between control sleeve and diaphragm spring, spec on page 137. Follow the FERODO or LUK adjustment procedure starting on page 164. Replace the plate if adjustment will not hold.

Manual Section: Power Train: Clutch Adjustment p. 164
Engine loses power under load and stalls after fifteen minutes in hot weather

Drain the fuel filters and check for water or debris, then replace the elements per the fuel system procedures starting on page 84. Clean the precleaner and air cleaner while you are in there. If stalling tracks with heat, test the thermostat in heated water; it must open at 79 ± 2°C, spec on page 46.

Manual Section: Engine: Fuel System p. 84
Coolant boils over at radiator cap and temperature gauge climbs during heavy fieldwork

Pressure test the radiator cap; its release valve must hold .7 bar (10 psi) before venting, per page 133. Replace a cap that vents early along with any soft or cracked hoses. Check fan belt tension, clean the radiator core, and verify the thermostat opens at 79 ± 2°C using the cooling system section starting on page 130.

Manual Section: Engine: Cooling System p. 133
Brakes feel spongy and pedal sinks slowly to the floor under steady pressure

Bleed the brake system following the hydraulic procedures in the brakes section starting on page 217. If the pedal still sinks, overhaul the master cylinder and inspect its seals. While the units are apart, measure the discs and replace any service disc worn below 10 mm (.39 in), spec on page 145.

Manual Section: Power Train: Brakes p. 217

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the torque specs for the engine bolts on a Fiat 1280DT?

For the Fiat 1280DT, the cylinder head capscrews (C₁) require a torque of M12 x 1.25, which translates to 147 Nm (15 kgm or 108 ft.lb). This specification is found in the engine data section of the manual. p. 56

What is the torque specification for clutch bolts on a Fiat 1880?

For the Fiat 1880, the clutch bolts (C₄) for the FERODO 14" clutch to the flywheel should be torqued to M 8 x 1.25, which is 25 Nm (2.6 kgm or 19 ft.lb). This detail is provided in the Power Train specifications. p. 150

How do you fix a Fiat 1180 hydraulic lift that's slow to raise and won't lift a loaded plow?

Rule out low or dirty hydraulic oil first. If the oil is good, the usual cause is lift cylinder piston clearance out of spec (it should read .030 to .100 mm, page 285) or a worn lift pump — the gear end clearance check for the pump starts on page 304. p. 285

How do you fix a Fiat clutch that slips under load and needs excessive pedal force?

Check clutch pedal free travel first — spec is 25 mm on 1180 H, 1380, 1580 and 1880 units, page 137. Follow the FERODO or LUK adjustment procedure on page 164; if the plate won't hold adjustment, it needs replacing. p. 164

What do I get after purchasing this Fiat 1180 & variants manual?

You get a 337-page scanned PDF that downloads instantly after checkout. Open it on your laptop, tablet, or phone, and bring it right to the shop floor.

Can I print this Fiat 1180 & variants manual?

Yes, print as many copies as you want, and there are no restrictions. Many mechanics print the section they need and bring it to the shop floor.

Does this Fiat 1180 & variants manual include hydraulic schematics?

Full hydraulic system diagrams are included, covering circuits, valve locations, and hydraulic component specs for the Fiat 1180 & variants.
